And while Election Day was a great day for our country, to my disappointment, it was a sad day for Mississippi. I have never in my lifetime seen as much racism between blacks and whites as I did in the hour after Obama was named the new president-elect. People were voicing their opinions through Facebook statuses claiming they were moving to another country or they were scared for the lives in this country. I literally became sick to my stomach when I read some of the things that were being said about our new president and about our country. Racial slurs were thrown around like it was the 1950s, and segregation between blacks and whites became evident once again. I am not putting all the blame on those who were saddened by the victory of Democratic candidate but those who were upset about the color of Obama's skin. Both races are at fault when it comes to ignorance.

To think that the color of skin can still be such a divisive issue is really disheartening. It speaks of ignorance and fear still rampant in the minds of many.
I hope to see the day when this issue is a bad memory and all the people of the world assess one another on intent and merit rather than on race or a cosmetic such skin color. -
Can we do a trade?
Or a select U.S.A. eviction even.Drop these racists scumbags off somewhere in Sudan (a refuge camp near Chad perhaps) and bring over in their place some starving people over that will actually contribute to this country?

There is nothing a racist fears more than his or her numbers dwindling in the face of change they can not control.
That fear is projected as hatred. -
I don't think this is too recent of a development.

perhaps it's only a temporary reaction. obama is like a racism vaccine. just tough out the initial side effects of inoculation until our immunity is strengthened. racist elements might attempt to work up a fever, but it will be their own undoing.
in the meantime we can just relax and drink soup.
-
Is your glass half full or half empty? Remember Obama can be thought of as either half black, half white, or just a human (the easiest). Come on folks lets move out of the past and into the future.
-
And you still live in that state? Move the fuck out! You sound too educated to be there, anyway.
-
its interesting that the red and blue states divide a lot like the union and confederate states (except Florida). I mean in the east only. See map below v

I think those racist hicks should move somewhere else. Next time tell them you think they should move. Canada? Do they realize what they are saying? that's where I want to move as a liberal because of all the stupid hicks and worthless health coverage here.
-
I was disappointed with the election results because I am a conservative who did not agree with Obama's policies, not because his skin is darker than mine. If Condi Rice or Clarence Thomas were running for president, they would have my vote for sure.
It is only ignorant people who are influenced by outside factors like skin color, or fatness or baldness. Sadly, many people are influenced by these characteristics. And on a totally unrelated note, my parakeet is really sick and we might have to put him to sleep Monday, so I've been up all night crying.

backlash from a dying breed.
It will take a lot to work towards unity, but if Obama's victory has taught us anything it is that we can, against all odds, make America and the world a better place.

Wow, theres a shocker. Racism in Mississippi
-
Not to malign everyone in the red states but, many in the red sections of this country are very afraid of change and not as enlightened as the blue areas. I lived down South in the 80's and was appalled by the continued racism. In fact it was quite shocking and I'm sure it won't go away too soon.
Very unfortunate.

This proves that there is still racism in America today.

Well, it's not me, it's not in my world, however it does get kind of old hearing about it all the time because everyone likes to use blanket labels when in fact blanket labels are obviously the farthest thing from the truth.
There are stupid people of all colors, this isn't anything new.

ive heard of things going both ways after the election. frankly i hope that we can derive energy from these recent negatives and move forward into open and honest racial discussion. hopefully we will see that a few bad actions and beliefs by some do not represent what the majority of people feel and that racists are extremists who deserve nothing less than a cold shoulder.

"Society" will forever be infected with racism. There is no country, state, city, community in the world that doesn't have an unhealthy dose. So, trying to rid our community of it is impossible.
As long as we act shocked by their behaviors and constantly struggle to subdue and extinguish their feelings, we'll never be at peace.
Our society continues to evolve. Some "cousins" are just slower at it than others. But don't be alarmed, we all know who they are and we're not giving them the car keys.

Ya know - I am a former Texan and new to MS. It's like another country here.
I don't doubt there are some radical and uneducated opinions here.
I am concerned about some of the things that Obama and Biden said during the campaign. There was some comments about mandatory youth service and so much about this take from the rich and give to the poor (socialism). I don't know. It's not his color, but his ideals.-

Was it suppose to be a threat when these people said they would leave the country? Because I'm pretty sure a lot of people wouldn't mind that at all.
-
i'm afraid this was the case more than in just mississippi, as well as people i know from all over georgia and tennessee.
i agree with your first paragraph very strongly.

Its not the majority, relax.... Dont get your panties up in a bunch. They aren't going to change, there is always going to be prejudice.
-
All liberals have heard for eight years is "If you don;t like it, move" So if they don't like it move.......

Obama's election was such a beautiful thing for the world and us in the USA, that gives me confidence that Americans are riding on a path to a more enlightened life. "It's been a long time comin,'" but we have long yet to go, if I may quote and take a bit out of context.
