Grape pips help stop Alzheimer's

Do you spit or swallow? Grape seeds that is.

If you are one of those people who likes a bit of crunch with your sweet lil' fruit than you could be protecting yourself from Alzheimer's as well.

Researchers at Flinders University, Australia, have found that chemicals found in grape seeds can help fight off the effects of Alzheimer's disease.

Grape seed extract was fed to mice affected by Alzheimer’s for six months, after which the researchers observed that their behaviour and brain pathology had improved whilst on the diet.

“We found that grape seed extract was a very powerful agent in reducing amyloid-beta deposits in the brain. It also produced marginal improvements in cognitive function and, most importantly, reduced inflammation,” Professor Xin-Fu Zhou said.

Those woody little seeds contain loads of polyphenols - molecules that are know to reduce the build up of amyloid-beta proteins in the brain. Large deposits of amyloid leads to clumps or snarls in the brain and is a major cause of Alzheimer’s disease.

Personally I think grape seeds ruin the entire experience. I'd risk Alzheimer's just so I can enjoy my seedless grapes thanks.

Grape seed extract can be purchased in pill form. I tried it to try to control pain and fatigue. I am excited that they are testing for memory issues. Loosing your mind is more unsettling that one may think.

Sadly, the seeds outer shell will probably make it go thru your digestive system with no benefit at all.

I would think that outer shell of the seed would need to be removed for the body to use what is inside.
