Reforestation programs are forcing Tibetans in Zanta's remote village to leave their tiny farms to make a living. Zanta, a 35-year-old widow who barely speaks Mandarin Chinese, goes to Beijing to illegally peddle Tibetan trinkets. Once there, she learns her father-in-law won't let the young son she left behind go to first grade. She makes the seven-day trip home and tells her family she will give her boy to an American journalist in Beijing, who several years before told her to call if she needs help. The story follows Zanta's struggle to educate her son while evading ever-more-stringent regulations banning street vendors. What happens after she offers to give her boy to the foreigner?
