A chimpanzee has become a surrogate mother to two tiger cubs separated from their mother after a hurricane.

Chimp Anjana has been helping care for the 21-day-old white Bengal tiger cubs, Mitra and Shiva, at The Institute of Greatly Endangered and Rare Species (TIGERS) in South Carolina, US.

Anjana's keeper, China York, said "she picked up on the fact that I am taking care of them, so she wants to take care of them too.... She is very gentle and gives them her finger when they are crying".

The two-year-old chimp even sleeps in the same bed as the baby cubs.

The chimp will continue looking after the cubs until they get too big or too rough.
