The war without an objective

Eric Margolis: Obama's only option is to make an agreement with Taliban and withdraw from Afghanistan. Part 2

Barack Obama was elected as the next president of the United States with a foreign policy platform based on the refocusing of US military might from Iraq to Afghanistan. In the second part of our interview with Eric Margolis, Eric tells the new president-elect that he needs to abandon his support for a strategy of military intervention in Afghanistan, make a deal with the Taliban and move his attention to areas of greater significance to US interests. The war, says Margolis, is now with the Pashtun people of Afghanistan, who make up half of the country's population, not a small group of largely disbanded terrorists known as Al Qaeda. Margolis ends by pointing out the potential for the conflict to destabilize Pakistan and potentially even draw India into a larger regional conflict.

Eric Margolis is a journalist born in New York City and holding degrees from Georgetown the University of Geneva, and New York University. During the Vietnam War he served as a US Army infantryman. Margolis is the author of War at the Top of the World –- The Struggle for Afghanistan and Asia is a syndicated columnist and broadcaster whose articles have appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The International Herald Tribune, Mainichi Shimbun and US Naval Institute Proceedings. Margolis is an expert of military affairs, a former instructor in strategy and tactics in the US Army, and a member of the International Institute of Strategic Studies and the Institute of Regional Studies in Islamabad, Pakistan. Eric Margolis' books have been published in the US, Canada, Britain, and India. He often appears and contributes to national and international news items for outlets such as CNN, ABC,CBC and Voice of America to the Wall Street Journal and Maninichi-Tokyo. He broadcasts regularly on foreign affairs for Canadian TV (TV Ontario and CBC), radio, and has appeared on ABC, CBS, CNN, and PBS.

It is most definitely a war with an OBJECTIVE. The objective to encircle Russia and China. The objective to get the control in the region. The objective to smuggle the drugs to US and Europe. Lots more if you ask the policy makers.

I hope the objective is to not allow the Taliban to become the ruling party in Afghanistan again. I actually believe that American intervention is a viable alternative to the allowing of public execution of women. The Taliban believe this treatment of women is their God given right. Not to mention their barbaric treatment of non followers of their radical religious beliefs.

We did this to the Afghans once before. We cannot do it again.

To understand the brutality of the Taliban, read "Kite Runner". It will open your eyes.

The bottom line.... we are more than broke and our war in Iraq is largely to blame. We can't afford another indefinite war with no clear objective. We need to get out now before we literally go bankrupt!

If we go bankrupt, that is SOOOO much worse than leaving a mess in the middle east. A financially crippled or dead America could be unavoidable if we continue our outrageous spending on military actions half-way around the globe. Some may argue that it's already happening now. Thanks a lot Bush!!

This war in Afghanistan and Iraq has made us MORE vulnerable to terrorist attacks...

More war + more debt + more blow-back = a less secure America!

    No war but class war.

About the recession, you do know that governments are legally allowed to print and control their own money, right? They don't though, because there are ulterior motives.

Ironic that I, an Anarcho-Communist, am often more aware of state policies than less radical citizens.
