Elton John against gay 'marriages'

Elton says a civil union is all that same sex couples need and that they should confuse the issue by asking for full marriage rights like opposite sex couples:

Elton John says the reason Prop. 8 in California passed, banning gay marriages, is because of one word — marriage.

“I don’t want to be married,” he told USA TODAY’s Donna Freydkin at a New York fundraiser last night. “I’m very happy with a civil partnership. If gay people want to get married, or get together, they should have a civil partnership,” said John. “The word marriage, I think, puts a lot of people off. You get the same equal rights that we do when we have a civil partnership. Heterosexual people get married. We can have civil partnerships.”

Of his partner David Furnish, he says, “We’re not married. Let’s get that right. We have a civil partnership. What is wrong with Proposition 8 is that they went for marriage. Marriage is going to put a lot of people off, the word marriage

If people even of the same sex want to have domestic partnerships. Its their Business. Congress can pass all the bills they want. To me having a partner in life delegates Marriage in my opinion

But why doesn't he want full equal rights? The word marriage should be applicable to all types of relationships, otherwise equality hasn't truly been acheived.

Elton doesn't get it. He comes from a different generation. In America, separate is NOT equal.

It's not about the word "marriage" as much as it's about the guise of separate but equal. Some people are uncomfortable with gays in general and don't want encroachment on there lifestyles. Others are just jerks and it's not enough for them not to like gay marriage they don't want anyone to like it. That's what I don't get. I don't like brussel sprouts but I could careless if you want to choke them down. You don't see me out crop dusting fields with DDT or Malathion.

I've long said the term marriage should be removed from the legal system as it is rooted in religious context. Unions, or legal partnerships, between two individuals regardless of race, sex or religion should hold the same legal rights: to property, offspring, medical care and taxes.

In the end, you have two camps: those who want the term marriage as vindication to an oppressive generation that was closed minded, and those of us who just want what the government claims to provide to "couples."

I just want the legal rights, I don't care what you call it.

I think civil partnerships are a good way to ease into gay marriage, but I don't think they are "enough"

Last time i checked, Elton wasn't a registed voter in our sunny state. Call me crazy but i hardly think he is the voice for all gay men and women, this is about equal rights anyway- not paralell rights.

It's pretty sad and telling that he, in his PC way stated "Heterosexual people get married. We can have civil partnerships..."

It's the same as saying, "White people can drink whereever they want, we blacks CAN HAVE this fountain over here".

its the fact that people want equal rights and want to be treated the same. our government doesn't tell us about alternatives they don't care

Elton John is a great musician, but he is wrong on this one. If he doesn't want to get married, he doesn't have to. However, it is a right that all gays and lesbians should have.

I find it amazing that soleil10 is agreeing with a man who said "Religion should be banned." It shows the level of hypocrisy and desperation that some people will go to to try(and fail) to prove a point. And anyway, the man is from England, he isn't "American."

I do think it's strange too, but EJ doesn't seem to understand that he can get a civil partnership if he wants- that doesn't mean marriage shouldn't be opened to include gay couples if they wish to get married. People should be free to do what they feel is best for their relationship- for some that is marriage, for some civil unions, for some just staying together with no legal or spiritual decree.

I am SO sick of the hostility towards redefining something. WE MADE MARRIAGE UP, the concept, the definition, everything- words as well as rights are commonly redefined as time goes on, it's a natural part of the evolution of society. Things change, get used to it!

Eldamon said this is about "the guise of separate but equal." YOU ARE 100% RIGHT. I've been saying that over and over again, that we already established that separate is not equal in our government and yet still, here we are, ignoring the lessons of the past again.

Solei said "He knows 2 opposite definitions of marriage cannot coexist."
The current definition for marriage is "the state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law" Just take out the "opposite sex" part, and you're all done! EASY AS PIE!

this is rediculous! I would agree with him except for one glaring flaw in his logic! There is a huge difference between civil unions and marriage! The entire point of the gay movement is that civil unions vary from state to state, and not one includes all the benefits of a regular state-sanctioned marriage!

When civil unions and marriage have the exact same rights, then who cares what it is called? But we are a long way from equality here!

Marriage is a religious thing, they can have it! Give gays the same rights and call it potato salad! I do not think they will care!

Marriage is NOT a religious institution, it is a secular one that predates religion. Just because those belonging to a religious belief are in the majority, does not give them the right to swoop up the word "marriage" and declare it "theirs."

Under the law there is supposed to be no preference given to the tenants of any one religion, so if one religion or church decides they do not want to perform same-sex ceremonies, but another religion or church decides it is in their best interest to do so, banning same sex marriages ignores the churches that want to perform such ceremonies, and that is illegal.

If you love someone that you want to have a civil partnership with then you should get "Married".

Separate but Equal comes to mind immediately. You can't have equal rights in that environment. It props up the notion of "special rights", and we ALL know how easy that pill is to swallow. The point of using the word "marriage" is that it is connected very clearly with the concepts of commitment and legal responsibility - why reinvent the wheel here? Forget the fact that "civil partnerships" are being resoundingly struck down in many states, the fact that ANY two people can be paired in the eyes of the law, it really sets up a double standard that can be used as a loophole in denying rights to a minority by terminology.
No matter how you slice it, civil partnerships are bad news and just another way to discriminate against people who don't fit the mold that some societies want them to.
Its ridiculous to cling to an antiquated, misinformed and highly discriminatory ideology that this mythical "sanctity" of marriage is only available to a certain population, especially considering that one religion does not corner the market on the ritual, nor do they have sole control over who may participate. Jesus would be pissed off if he were around now, witnessing the horrible judgments people are making in his name. Its a shame more Christians don't come out and explain what Jesus actually said on the topic of gays and lesbians - nothing.

I don't understand why gays want "marriage" either...judging by statistics, its only doomed to fail. Grant them the same equal rights under a different title.

Lables, lables, lables, married or domesticated relationship who cares! The bible thumpers are stuck and will always be stuck on lables like calling God Jesus Christ. Who cares what they think. Let them have a "lable" like marraige, maybe you can just call it something else......
