"Originally, MDMA (ecstasy) was used for everything from couples therapy to managing pain in terminally ill cancer patients. Dr. Alexander Shulgin was the pioneer in that field, staring in the 50's. Check him out. He's a very interesting character. Remember, just because it feels good and f*cks you up, doesn't mean it has to be illegal. Anything that will help our troops when they return from this stupid war, I'm all for."- Bansheewail

It's high time we realize that some drugs are both theraputic and recreational. But, just because their fun doesn't mean they should be illegal. Education is the key. Any substance used irresponsibly can be dangerous.

Who woulda thought. Another example of which medicine.
-
You know if the government would legalize and strictly regulate certain "drugs" and tax the hell out of them, maybe our financial situation as a country wouldn't be as bad...just a thought!
-
This way of using drugs for therapy is far better than putting people on anti-depressants or mood stabilizers- which have bad side-effects- for the rest of their lives.
I think the only people that wouldn't benefit from this research are pharm companies because they'd be selling drugs for a few sessions rather than life times. They will be the biggest road blocks for this research.

BFAM_RVS,
It's not really a perspective. MDMA has been around since 1911. Shulgin's extensive work was done in the 70's. MDMA didn't hit the street until the 80's. And wasn't even illegal until 1985. It's nothing new. The truth about MDMA and it's wonderful applications are just new to you and a bunch of other people, I would bet.-

I am all for heavy taxes to control drugs, making them illegal just screws over the taxpayers.

It Sould be legal to the paople who really need it; People with PTSD, cancer, aids,...and bored kids like myself who want to have a good time at a concert. :)
-
Was the laboratory a controlled environment... strobe lights, dance floors, and a pulsing techno beat?
-
It's interesting that Dr. Michael Mithoefer is getting funding for this sort of research in such a post-modern culture obssessed with political correctness and legality. But I think in the right sort of environment in controlled amounts, this sort of therapy could be very successful.

Are they still looking for people to sign up to test it out?
-
Intresting Study. Plus they supply a better source than the E tab you buy on the street that is loaded with all kinds of stuff.
-
I wonder to treat PSD, do the patients take a dose daily? After continued usage ecstasy can make you very depressed.

It has also been successfully used in marriage counseling as well as other difficult to deal with psychological problems.
MDMA is a wonderful substance as long as it's not abused!
Did you know they used to sell it in gas stations for truck drivers? It helped them stay alert and comfortable on their long treks across the country!
-
Careful. Pure clean MDMA in reasonable doses sparingly is one thing ...
... street ecstasy taken on a regular, even fairly regular basis is another.
I have been closely involved in the house music scene for years. The evidence of mental and emotional damage from taking it over a long enough period of time is obvious.
Plenty of people are in denial about that; when you know them well you can see the deterioration in their mood, personality and ability to cope in life.
It's sad.

Used correctly most things have a positive use, but i cant help but think "She goes running for the shelter of a mothers little helper"

Here you go

i perfer a little acid or maybe some mushroom to heal what ails the mind. but thats just me.

Speaking from deep experience (I spent a few years "doing research" in the Hollywood afterhours club scene), the use of drugs and their relative pros, cons, and safety totally depends on the people and the circumstance in which they are being used.
All drugs aren't necessarily "bad", but they are powerful and dangerous, and the biggest flaw I saw in the whole system was the way "drugs" were labeled to be illegal in the first place, causing all the WRONG people to be using them and doing so with severe misinformation and short-sighted stupidity.
If it were my world I would be using certain drugs like E and weed to create a new spiritual church-type experience, but as it stands the entire system is designed and run by people who really seem to approach problems from the wrong (but understandably naive) perspective.

MDMA is very different from ecstasy. Some ecstasy doesn't even have MDMA in it.
DanceSafe.org provides information about the chemical ratios in different pill presses. You can even send a sample in anonymously for analysis.

Its been successful in marriage counseling presumably because it gives the user a false sense of affection and streamlines their thought process towards the positive (for the most part). This is good AND bad. Treating emotional distress and hiding from it are two different things, but they can easily overlap. Kinda like taking recreational drugs to enhance an experience and taking it because you've forgotten how to enjoy the simple things in life (like a concert) without the use of drugs. More scary than beneficial IMO.

I actually run a support group for people in chronic pain. In about 2001 a girl told me that the only way she could manage her severe and 24/7 pain was with "E".
Now, there are so many customizations of "E", that I wouldn't know where to start to look for safe pain relief without other side effects.
But what the girl in my group was responding to and what helped her was the tremendous serge of seratonin to her brain and it blocked her pain receptors to an extent that she could have some time without agony.
With doctors being afraid to prescribe proper pain medications, more and more chronic and severely chronic pain patients are turning to illegal drugs.

I have a friend who is a biologist who studies mice.
She uses MDMA to kill their brain cells for experimentation. No thanks.
