The 42-year-old Turkish citizen - who was serving a seven-year sentence - had been making stationery with other prisoners destined for the shops.
At the end of his shift, the inmate climbed into a cardboard box and was taken out of prison by express courier. His whereabouts are still unknown.
The chief warden of the jail told the BBC this was an embarrassing incident.
The prison authorities in Willich, near Duesseldorf, said the man, who was tall and broad-shouldered, had hidden in a box that was about 150cm by 120cm.

The prisoner had probably read many books on prisoners escaping from the POW camps during the 2nd world war studied their methods and decided that was too strenuous and time consuming . He took the simple way out but I wonder how he managed to pay the postal charges and who stuck the stamps on the box?

If I ever commit a prison worthy crime, I will be sure to setup a P.O. Box, while out on bail, somewhere beautiful and out of jurisdiction.

Gotta give him props!!
In many countries it is your human right to try to escape. Although it is also the governments right to try and kill you if you do, but that is beside the point.

Hmmm, wonder if I could escape my life by this method?
-
lmfao thats humiliating :D
-
Ah, but you didn't hear the end of the story. DHL made a mistake over sender and addressee and delivered him back after a couple of months.
-
can you imagine the guy who helped him? he was about to find someone else to help him close and send his box and then they found out how the first guy did it and now the clever ideas are back to square one.
-
Uh, OK. I guess their mail room workers have the same attention to detail as ours - especially when everybody else is mailing letters. Herr "Handle With Care" must have had help with this great escape somewhere along the way.
