The billboard is paid for by a Colorado atheist group. The message sits against a blue sky backdrop and says, "Don't believe in God? You're not alone."
Ten billboards will pepper metro Denver, while one will be put up in Colorado Springs."And we're putting them up in November and December because of the holidays, when church and state issues tend to come up a lot," said Joel Guttormson, with Metro State Atheists. "To let non-believers, free-thinkers and atheists know that they are not alone, especially in a country like ours that is predominantly Christian."
Pastor Willard Johnson of Denver's Macedonia Baptist Church called the billboards a desperate effort to discredit Christianity.
"The Bible is being fulfilled. It says that in latter days, you have all these kinds of things coming up, trying to disrupt the validity of Christianity," Johnson said. "If they don't believe in God, how do they believe they came about? We denounce what they are doing. But we do it with love, with gentleness, with decency and with compassion."
Bob Enyart, a Christian radio host and spokesman for American Right to Life, said it's hard to ignore the evidence.
"The Bible says that faith is the evidence of things not seen. Evidence. If we ignore the evidence for gravity or the Creator, that's really dangerous," said Enyart. "Income tax doesn't not exist because somebody doesn't believe in it. And the same is true with our Creator."
The billboards will go up Nov. 17. The atheist group, called Colorado Coalition of Reason or COCORE, also wanted to put up signs in Fort Collins and Greeley, but a billboard company there refused to carry the message.
Johnson said atheism is a rebellion against Biblical principals and the billboard will likely offend many Christians.
COCORE said this is about rights.First Amendment
"And I've read the First Amendment up and down and nowhere does it say that I have to care about your feelings. We're either 10 to 16 percent of the population, and the reason we don't really know is because people are scared to come out because they're ostracized by the people around them," said Guttormson.

I never knew what that tingling feeling of togetherness and love during the holidays really was until now. We are not alone indeed.
-
For some reason seeing any billboards advocating a certain belief rub me the wrong way. Whether it be Christian, Atheist or any variation of belief (my own included), I hate having it shoved in my face.
-
Athiests need representation in this country.
seriously.
I hate having a country run by idiotic religious nuts.

I'm voting this up. Nothing wrong with some civil discourse.
-
While I understand that they are allowed to put these billboards up, I think it's disrespectful to do it during the holiday season. Why not put them up during another time of year? It seems like they are more interested in causing drama than passing along a message.

and thus, ever so slightly, my confidence in Americans is restored...
as for the radio host who said:
"The Bible says that faith is the evidence of things not seen. Evidence. If we ignore the evidence for gravity or the Creator, that's really dangerous..."
I would say that referring to words from ancient texts as "evidence" is what's truly dangerous

It is true that people claim to be Christians because they are afraid if they say they are Atheists they will get ball blasted, AND IT'S TRUE!
John Stewart made a very apt statement to Bill O'dumbass on the Daily Show. "Just cause you are a Christian doesn't mean your better or Holier than anyone, it just means you go to church."
Also Christians have a crappy track record when it comes to MORALS. Look at almost every major Christian leader, or the whole Catholic church for that matter.
-
personally i would like all billboards taken down as they obstruct my view of the amazing skies above.

Atheism is the 30,000,000* pound gorilla in the room. It's often misjudged and then avoided.
*30,000,000 is a rough estimation of non-believers in the United States

"trying to disrupt the validity of Christianity" Bwahahahahaha! They don't need any help in that department!
Anyway, here we are again! I think it's funny how some people here feel so offended, yet they don't realize how offensive it is to Atheists to call this "disrespectful" or claim that Atheism is the "belief in nothing". This is why billboards like this are popping up more and more; Atheism is largely misunderstood by the masses.
I can't see anything offensive about this. If you believe in god, you're not alone. If you don't, you're also not alone. What's the big fuss?

Controversy -It's what gets us talking. And that is how it generally starts.
I am a believer in what I believe and that's the way I like it. I'm not scared about the other side of life.
I know that it is suppose to be infinite diversity in infinite combinations. That's what makes the world a beautiful place...

Billboards are a great way of raising conciousness about the existence of atheists in the United States. Too many atheists are afraid to come out and tell other people about their convictions, especially in religious parts of the country.
People forget that there are actually more atheists than Jews in this country, and this is a great step in making ourselves heard.

I'm confused as to how these are controversial. If anything, all it says is that if your atheist, you're one of many. It's message says nothing to debunk any religious ideals or to cause any stir. It makes sense to put these up during holiday seasons, when depression and alienation lead many to commit suicide. I think it serves more as a form of comfort to those feeling disconnected from the masses of carolers and live-nativity-scene actors, perhaps feeling either annoyed at all the hypocritical crap flying around or the non-participatory role they inherently take on during these times (obviously, not every case, but perhaps some).

Yes someone using their FREEDOM of speech and of religion! May religious folks everywhere learn to accept that ALL AMERICANS are allowed their opinion(s) on private matters. It doesn't AUTOMATICALLY make them IMMORAL to not agree with any given religion -
Oh and here's a shout out to the men anf women fighting to DEFEND the CONSTITUTION that gives America these rights!
PS- REJECT atheism
-
Discourse and debate are good. We should not be afraid to talk about that which is most important.
It is much more difficult to be an atheist in this country than it is to be an Xtian. It is a testament to the human spirit that so many are willing to stand up for what is right in the face of persecution and bigotry. It is incumbent upon those of us brave enough to face the truth to lead our brothers and sisters out of the darkness and away from religious superstition.
-
Their are so many misperceptions about atheists, it is good to just begin to have a conversation around those that are secular agnostics or atheists.
-
Kenny, why should we reject atheism?

Religion,to me,is the most confusing and hard to believe subject I've ever known.I'm sure we were put here for a reason, but the bible has so much"fiction"written in it(by man!)that it makes me wonder what really is.

Everyone should be able to speak out. Atheist put up with our Christian crap all the time. Let's be tolerant. =0)
-
If the catholics can bang on my door at 8:00am telling me Jesus loves me and wants me in church, I see no problem with this billboard. Equal representation right? freedom of speech?
