Republicans praise idea of Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State

(CNN) — Republicans praised the prospect of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Sunday.

Former Nixon and Ford Secretary of State Henry Kissinger said Sunday that Clinton would be an “outstanding” selection.

“She is a lady of great intelligence, demonstrated enormous determination and would be an outstanding appointment," Kissinger told the World Economic Forum's India Economic Summit in New Delhi, according to Bloomberg News.

Clinton is reportedly President-elect Barack Obama’s top pick for the post.

“If it is true, it will show a couple of things," Kissinger said. “It shows great courage on the part of the president-elect to appoint a very strong personality, who has an independent constituency, into a cabinet position. It also shows willingness on the part of Clinton to subordinate herself to someone whom she lost out to."

    • Duh, Clinton grew up republican. I would say that a good percentage of her policy stances are not that far off from sensible republicans. Health care you say? Isn't her stance on Universal Health Care a bit socialist? Not if you read Nixon's final State of the Union Address. He was planning on pushing UHC because they knew way back when that trading proper health care for profit margins was a joke if not a sin. Of course our "right to life" must end somewhere between not being aborted and election day. Wait did I just say duh ?

    • Interesting. I don't think Hillary would do a bad job as Secretary of State, but I wonder about the wisdom of appointing her. She's shown herself to be extremely strong willed, and I would be skeptical about her willingness to stick to the administration's policies and not use the position to jump-start a bid for the 2012 nomination.

    • I believe that Hillary has already stated that she is not interested in a cabinet position. She said that she planned to remain in the Senate.

    • How can people be criticizing Obama stating hes "not changing" when he hasnt taken office?! Jumping the gun a bit arent you?

Yes some of these people are repeats from the Clinton administration (many of which did excellent jobs and Im glad to see them in the White House again) but also remember that 8 years is a long time...policies and political ideals can change a lot in that time (think of how much youve changed in 8 years). These people are not all the same politically as they were 8 years ago just as this country is not the same as it was 8 years ago. Also its not like just anyone is qualified to fill a cabinet position, there is only a small pool of people qualified to pick from really. What do people expect? Obama to name Oprah or Bill Gates as secretary of state?!

Get your itchy fingers off the trigger at at least wait until the man and his staff takes office before you launch the attack. Its kind of foolish to criticize without anything even taking place.

    • Leno: so that means she'll be traveling around the world and be far away for a long time. bill's reaction was "YES!!"

lol, i think Bill richardson would've been a better choice... more foreign policy experience.
hillary seems more like a domestic policy oriented person

I agree with you on this one....I think she would do a fine job as secretary of state but I would rather see her in her element...working on domestic policy. I think she could do a lot more good in Labor, Health or Education than foreign policy.

    • I think all this talk about change is funny. First of all, he said change, not radical change. Is someone seriously expecting things to radically change????

But more importantly, this is still a democracy. These people work for us. We sit around like sheep when they start wars, for christs sake. We do nothing when they rape the constitution. We allow a VP with a gay daughter to get mad when he is asked his opinion on gay rights. We allow the same bailout that we opposed just a week before.

We are responsible for change, not Obama. We run this county, not him. They wokk for us, at our pleasure.

      Take your country back people!

    • I know that Obama is trying to build a team of rivals but diplomacy and international relations were the main point of discord between Barack and Hillary during the primary run. Why would he pick a person who said that meeting with Ahmadinejad would be naive and that Iran should be "wiped off the map" if it attacks Isreal... That sounds like the same type of international "cooperation" that poisoned the rest of the worlds opinion of America...

This is why Obama needs to keep his message of change, appoint new blood, and take this country in a new direction.

Not to mention that I won't be able to take the deja vu of a Clinton being grilled by Congress at the very beginning of this historic moment...

    • The republicans would love to get Hillary out of the Senate. In the Senate she is a force to be reckoned with, in the cabinet she is Obama's problem. And i am sure there are few republicans not willing to favor Obama with problems.

    • Even Hillary can wake up. We are in changing times even bigger than Barack. But I still think he is the one to man the ship. Quit being such nay - sayers. Funny how the country wasn't working worth shit, and we all see it but when someone different has an idea all hell breaks loose. Dammed if we do, and dammed if we don't!

    • I first heard this trend back when she was campaigning for the primaries. I was amazed to hear ANN COULTER say she would vote Hillary over McCain if it came to it.

    • Whoever he picks he picks for a reason. I don't think he's stupid. I don't think many people are that stupid. They just make wrong choices....wrong choices doesn't = stupid.

I think he needs to have cabinet positions given to more than just who he likes and he doesn't like her...so it says a lot if he picks her.

    • Why not? Looks like Obama is looking to having a Clinton administration w/ all the Clintonites he is considering in his administration. Looks like no change just another Clinton administration ... I thought we were going to see change??? Where??? This would also make it harder for her to run for president in 2012, eliminating competition for Obama in the DNC...

Haha maybe it was just misunderstood. Maybe he meant a change back to where we were (?).
His policies are quit different though, wonder if the cabinet can reflect that.
