U.S. admits it held 12 juveniles at Guantanamo

The government has provided a corrected report to the U.N. committee on child rights, according to Navy Cmdr. Jeffrey Gordon. He said the U.S. did not intentionally misrepresent the number of detainees taken to the isolated Navy base in southeast Cuba before turning 18.
"As we noted to the committee, it remains uncertain the exact age of many of the juveniles held at Guantanamo, as most of them did not know their own date of birth or even the year in which they were born," he said.
A study released last week by the Center for the Study of Human Rights in the Americas concluded the U.S. has held at least a dozen juveniles at Guantanamo, including a Saudi who committed suicide in 2006.
"The information I got was from their own sources, so they didn't have to look beyond their own sources to figure this out," said Almerindo Ojeda, director of the center at the University of California, Davis.

Nobody in America wants to explore the reasons behind terrorism, just as nobody wants to explore the reasons behind America's high levels of murder, crime and homelessness.
Because it all leads to one very dark place: Greed.
As much as it protects the powerful to simplify every problem to race or religion, it's common sense that when a society places money and profit above human life, some humans are not going to be happy about that.

We still incarcerate juveniles who commit rape murder etc in the US. Could it be that some of these young jihadis fit into Bin Laden's formula of recruiting 15 to 24 year old to carry out jihad? Watch the video above!

All I can say is prove to me they did something. There are many people in Guantanamo that protest their innocence and our own judges denied them a right to trial. We cant just assume they are guilty because we have put them in a "jail". Especially after people have been proven innocent and still kept........

I still don't think that Gitmo Bay has been given enough media attention as far as the atrocities committed there and how morally wrong it is.The hypocrisy is so blatant - this nation wants to "spread democracy" while still practicing heinous acts within its own territories, and not even respecting the natural laws which should be provided for all criminals in the United States such as habeas corpus. Unacceptable.

It puzzles me as to how we've gotten here from the days of brazen independence and idealistic fundamentals. I think many Founding Fathers would be ashamed to see what Americans have done to disturb what great potential their framework had the ability to produce.

Seriously Bloodhound get yourself some information. Iloveravi brings a lot fo good points and even provides you with some information and i really urge you to look into that because seeing that you think this way makes me realize that there are a lot more people who think the same way and that is just sad. What the U.S. does or has done is very horrifying. They say we were attacked by terrorists so the U.S. goes and kills lots of more innocent people. Guantanamo Bay itself takes away the rights of many. They don't get the right of being innocent until proven guilty and having children in the Guantanamo? That's ridiculous. I think it is BS that the U.S. didn't know much of their age.

I believe that any hope of rehabilitation is out of the question. Even though they are "children", the have probably been brain washed sence the day they were born to hate all Americans. There is no way to overcome that kind of hate now. The real question is what can you do with a teenage guy who has pledged to his god that he will kill you every single chance he gets. And he will continue to do so till the day he dies. Where on earth can you put someone like that? Its like a gun just waiting to go off.

"Why does it matter, the US was attacked remember 9/11 our enemies behead Americans"
Yes, we remember. It matters because we strive to be better than the scum who attacked us. It also matters because we know, for a fact, that at least some of the people sent to Gitmo were sent there by mistake, and most have never even been given the opportunity to defend themselves against the charges that have never been made against them.
"Were they beaten,starved,torchered to death?"
Yes.
There are quite a few prisoners who checked into Gitmo that will never be checking out.
"The USA isn't perfect but never in our history have we committed the atrocity's that have been blantanly used on Americans"
What atrocities exactly are you talking about? If you are referring to things like beheadings, then I would argue that, while more gruesome, it's really no worst then killing someone with artillery or air strikes. If you are referring to the attacks on 9/11 then I will have to remind you that the United States is the only country to ever use nuclear weapons against civilian populations.

i think someone stated earlier that people under 25 years of age are incapable of thinking of the consequences of their actions. Besides, wouldn't you agree with Bin Ladin? 15-20 year olds would be fairly easy to sway with the (right kind of fear tactics and persuasive propaganda) because they are impressionable. 21-24 year olds would still be impressionable, but i would assume to a lesser degree as they are almost 25.
We are fed propaganda too. If it is fed to us right, we end believing in AND committing atrocities.

But it is hard not to. I know there are a lot of great americans and that as a whole americans have good intentions.
Yet, at the same time as a whole they have the power to stop this and they don't.
They are supposed to be against this behavior and they are not.
When do we stop looking at america as an abstract entity and start looking at it as a collection of people who elect leaders to carry out their will?
When will the american people take responsibility for the power they have?

Americans are no longer told they have any power, they are complacent to the actions of our government. I wish that everyone I talk to about activism would have an optimistic outlook on it. Our schools teach our children to "sit down and shut up". This reflects on so many adults actions.Go to work, pay your bills, let the decisiions be made for you.......That is now the American way.

Not knowing the age...I get that.
Thinking children are innocent just because they are children....I understand that, while at the same time there are vile children...they do exist and I've met them. The amount of sympathy for such children I would have zero should they get themselves in enough trouble to get this kind of treatment.
But torturing anyone is just wrong. I've seen how it can work better if you just do other things.....so that's that.

Yes they do. They are more likely to be serial killer. i would like to think that a death is a death no matter who commits it. Meaning if a child kills your mother you're still upset no matter if it was a child or a twenty year old.
However the stories I know of children killers are pretty gruesome and they are just as deadly, if no more so, than adult ones.
I agree that a trial is what should be done. I just don't think children are forgiven just because they are children. People who say that have never met a vile child.

Jammer, I think you are missing the point.
I'm not saying that children are angels because they are young.
Hell, we have all heard the stories of children doing evil shit.
But are you sure these kids are guilty? 55% of the inmates at gitmo haven't even been charged.
My point is that doing something fundamentally wrong to another person is horrible but doing something fundamentally wrong to a child is unforgivable.
We all get more upset by child rapists and child murderers than we do at people who do the same things to adults.
I see this in the same way.

Let's hope President-Elect Obama will right these injustices and at the very least ensure proper trials for the inmates, speedily, so that if they are innocent they can be set free.
If found guilty, perhaps they can be moved to a less terrible place than Gitmo.

Princeton defines concentration camps: a penal camp where political prisoners or prisoners of war are confined (usually under harsh conditions)
The term fits perfectly. They are help without charges or trial and tortured.
