Problems worldwide for HIV-positive travelers

Winnie Sseruma was invited to speak about being HIV-positive at the United Nations in New York last June. While preparing for her trip, Winnie found out the US was one of 70 countries with a ban or restriction on inbound travel for people with HIV. Winnie, who lives in the UK, managed to get a visa on time, but was detained twice in the airport for furhter questioning. "It was so humiliating," Sseruma said. "The immigration officers were asking me very personal questions about my health." The US has since passed an amendment to the ban, but for now it is still in place.

Countries with HIV travel bans
Armenia
Brunei
Colombia
Fiji
Iraq
Libya
Moldova
Russia
Saudi Arabia
South Korea
Sudan

Next thing you know the lines at airports will get even longer so everybody can have a rapid HIV test before boarding the plane. This whole thing has gotten so ridiculously out of hand.

It's a very scary and sad situation. It should never be assumed infected people would intentionally infect others... However, it is a very unfortunate reality that there are those who would do such things, but the innocent should not be humiliated....

It's a shame that after so many years, people are still ignorant when the subject is HIV/AIDS. This kind of discrimination leads people to stigma which is fueled by assumptions about the moral integrity and values of those affected by this disease. Stigmatizing does not help at all in prevention efforts. Education and respect are the key to control the pandemic.

So what did they think she was going to have sex with people on the plane or cut her self and start bleeding on people, otherwise WTF. But seriously the odds are every American has come into contact with or regularly comes into contact with some one who is HIV positive, they could even be in your family, lets ostracize and humiliate them.

You would be amazed at the ignorance of some people.

I am HIV positive and I take offense to many of the comments on this website by ignorant people who seemed to be very uneducated, that or they were raised in radical religious schools who preach hate.

Personally I think that we need to purge the world of religious people altogether. We wouldn't have half the problems we are facing when it comes to war and poverty.

look I know my msg bothers a lot of people and I’m not trying to be cold but what do you think we do allow all the diseased people in the world come into our country..?? Really how are you supposed to make the choice of which can come in.. We need to stop being babies and afraid to protect what is left.. I agree education on the matter is very important but what if someone has HIV and wants to continue spreading it??? Some people have no regard for others . I'm not about to sit here and let dirty people come into our country when we already have our own mess why add to it?? I know a lot of cases people are raped and then receive it but f*ck what if they continue the spreading process?? Honestly I can say if I did have it I would feel even STRONGER ABOUT PROTECTING THE ONES WHO DON'T and that msg is for you jubal... I feel like the more we try to be compassionate on certain issues it only hurts us in the long run.. WE NEED TO PROTECT WHAT IS LEFT AND IF THAT MEANS STEPPING ON TOES THEN YOU KNOW WHAT SOO BE IT...
