Dwight DeLee, the suspect accused of shooting and killing a transgender woman Friday night because she was transgender, is being held without bail after a court appearance.

Police say DeLee, 20, shot and killed 22-year-old Latiesha Green. She was living as a female, known to family and friends as Latiesha Green.

DeLee was arraigned Monday morning in Syracuse City Court on a charge of second degree Murder. No bail was set and he remains in custody.

A friend told Lateisha Green and her brother Mark Cannon, 18, to stop by a party at 411 Seymour Street on Friday night. When they pulled up to the police, police say a number of people took issue with their arrival because the Lateisha was transgender and her brother was gay.

DeLee allegedly walked up to their parked car and began shouting profanities. Police say he then went inside the house and came back out with a 22-caliber rifle.

DeLee fired a single round through the driver’s side window, according to police. The bullet grazed Mark Cannon’s arm and hit Latiesha Green in the chest.

Mark, who was sitting in the driver’s seat, drove to Arthur Street where an ambulance picked them up and took them to University Hospital. Latiesha Green was later pronounced dead. Mark was treated and released.

DeLee fled the party after the shooting and police later found him at a home in Liverpool where he was arrested.

Police say DeLee has a history of weapons and drug charges on file.

Murder? Is that what Jesus would do?

If not for the other 1,138 reasons to undo the current attack on equal rights, let's do it to legally confirm that the hate bred by unequal rights is unacceptable.

If our laws say that gay makes you less human than not gay, how can we expect the uneducated and unloving to think otherwise? Right now, we're giving them confirmation that their hate is justified, and that their religion should be law.

It is not law that we should do unto others as you would have them do unto you, nor is it law to love thy neighbor. These two proponents of this religious-led crusade against equal rights seem to be cast aside more readily. Maybe, just maybe, the law is a powerful force in the realm of public opinion - and perhaps much of the hate is bred out of a twisted patriotic effort to continue on the hatred.

God is also the justification for slavery, genocide, manifest destiny, the oppression of women, and the oppression of animals. Let's be real about what God wants - or the respect the targeted populations deserve.

How many more lives will be lost in this bigot war? Perhaps this woman would have cured aids, or raised the child who cured aids. Perhaps she was supposed to make someone smile the next day, and now they won't ever know her.

Let's keep her in our hearts and minds. Let's honor the casualties of this war every day, and let's make certain they are honored nationally someday, as veterans who served one country, one world.

The shooting is alleged that several people had a problem with gay people attending the party.

KTLK radio’s Chris Baker followed up his Nov. 14 comments about a transgender person being a “mutilated lesbian” with a tirade in which he blames the media — and transgender people themselves — for the murder of Latiesha Green in Syracuse, New York. On his Nov. 18 show, Baker said:

"Doesn’t some of the blame lie with the American media who enables this fraud? Doesn’t some of the blame — I would say a majority of the blame does not lie with the nitwit that shot him, other than the fact that he’s a nitwit and a guy who should have been in prison in my opinion, who shot him. But to me, this is the — this is an example of how, by enabling people and trying to push this false reality, leads to horrible crimes like this…"
