Not so easy - Men who sleep with 'sex slaves' face prosecution

Image...
Men using prostitutes now may face criminal charges, if the women they sleep with are either controlled by pimps, or have been trafficked into the country specifically for this purpose.

The home secretary, Jacqui Smith states: those who paid for sex with people “controlled for another person’s gain” will be guilty of an offence and face fines of £1,000 and a criminal record. I am targetting people who aim to make money out of women being treated as slaves says Smith. “What I disapprove of is women being exploited in this country, coerced, trafficked into the country."

When asked why she was not proposing an outright ban on prostitution, the Home Secretary said that she accepted some women made the argument that they had a "free choice to engage in this" - so only those being exploited should be the focus of new laws.

There's going to be the headache of "was she trafficked or wasn't she" for the police to resolve.

If they legalised prostitution they could make street soliciting entirely illegal and regulate heavily and regularly the licensed brothels. Anyone caught soliciting sex on the street is arrested.

I think Jacqui is moving in the right direction on this.

    Prostitution is the oldest profession.
If someone wants to pay to bone, go for it.

Look at Nevada. They have it highly regulated and their system has worked.

Nice headline grabbing story but the burden of proof will make it a toothless law.

Sex trafficking needs to be irradicated but the money involved will always make it an attractive prospect for lawless individuals.

This is a documentary on human trafficking. It's interesting information on how much it's done and who it is done too. It's sad and heartbreaking. But the documentary itself is boring, I think, but the info is good and people need to know.

I think it's good to try to stop people from doing this knowingly, but I agree that it's going to be difficult to prove.

Although this is a fairly right wing decision which infringes people's rights to a certain extent, the specific restrictions on the law will hopefully help make prostitution safer.

Let me say something here, against crime Im a conservative but about prostitution Im a liberal.
Im against human trafficking or slaves but if a woman wants to work as a hooker let her do it.
Something else, I believe prostitution should be legalized and I bet you the rape numbers will go down.
Hookers are doing a great service to men who are single and can not get a girlfriend.
For me, strippers and hookers are the best thing in this planet, let them work .
I believe the goverment should make them to have medical checks so they wont spread a vd, with that the men population will be happy.
Ho,Ho,Ho,Ho merry christmass to all of you.

I don't get it, they will bust a guy for sleeping with some one forced into the sex trade?

To do this they will need to know who has been forced into the trade and who has chosen it.

If they know who is being forced and trafficked why are they not rescuing these people right away?

Are they really willing to allow them to continually be raped so they can arrest johns?

Kind of sounds like women being exploited to me.

Dont forget that there are men and wemon pimps. And some money hunger organization of females that will only have sex for money. But, sex slaves is degenerate and corrupt. Wouldnt mind busting a few.

wow, what a great way to avoid the real problem, dilute the law, and jam our courts with more garbage. Sounds like laywers making more work for themselves to me.

If the sex workers are slaves then I agree with this idea, but if the sex workers are self employed, then I think this is really stupid to prosecute their customers for rape.

    It's pretty smart actually.
There are gonna be a lot more johns making sure the prostitution is voluntary, they don't want a criminal record and a fine after all.
This way, the industry regulates itself.

slaves=bad but if the girl chose that job herself and has no part of the whole pimp thing then thats her buisiness

Are they going to have something like a library cards to distinguish independents? Maybe the non-slaves could unionize and then the johns could look for the union label.

The concept of a sex slave is appalling. If they really want this to work, they should cut off one ball of the offender each time he's caught. If it doesn't work the first time, it will positively work the second time.

And rightfully so! Why is is that prostitutes themselves always get the worse sentencing than the the johns and the pimps who are promoting the crime!

I could theoretically agree that a girl should be able to work on her own (or a man, for that matter). But what about the girl who swears she's working for someone willingly because she's afraid of retaliation? Or the gal who does it because some guy got her hooked on drugs and she is working off the debt? I get the intent of the law - I'm just wondering about the practical applications of it. How does Nevada deal with that?

i feel that as long as the girl is not forced into prostitution then she should be allowed to sell herself.
but i donot condone women being brought to this country to be raped..

Although the atrocities that some of these sex slaves go through are outrageous and horrible what happens to those who make a living off of prostitution. This has the potential of helping but could also greatly affects these woman in more negative ways then just having to sell themselves but also not being able to make any money at all.. so what is the worse of the two negatives? Taking away the costumers for these woman or preventing the harm they potentially face?

Are we ever going to stop trying to stamp out things that will not stamp? There are easier & more effective ways to do this. Were prostitution legal, there would be no market for slaves. We're going at this ass backwards. If a girl wants to do this then give her a license and let her go. It's her body and should be her choice. There's no such thing as a Las Vegas pimp. Legalize prostitution and the bottom drops out of that market. This is hard?

Sex slavery equals Black slavery. These women usually do not know they are going into prostitution but think they are moving to another country to get a well paying job. They are beaten, severely abused, and forced to take drugs. Their workday can be 12 hours or more. Prosecute anyone that takes advantage of these girls who usually cannot speak the language of the country they are in.

I don't know how this law would be enforced. Also, based on the belief that 'selling by owner' prostitution shouldn't necessarily be illegal, I'm not sure if it's particularly fair to the john.

If you want to go after sex slavery, skip the john and go after the traffickers.
I'm afraid all this law would do is bring down some unfortunate horny men and make sex slaves work longer hours.
