Family guy creator claims science is "undervalued and degraded"

It's OK though, as he's right behind a new initiative being fostered by the US National Academy of Sciences that aims to improve the scientific accuracy of what the entertainment industry produces, as well as helping to improve public relations between scientists and the general public.

The project, called the Science and Entertainment Exchange, will be run by the writer of 'The Physics of the Buffyverse' and has been labelled by Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane as 'vitally important.' The screenplay writer of The Empire Strikes back and Return of the Jedi has also given it their seal of approval.

MacFarlane stated: "This idea that intelligence is somehow not cool or not American or [is] something to be scorned has been kind of embraced by a lot of people... Just exposing entertainers to more science will help improve the situation."

He seems eager to get things moving himself as he let slip that he's just completed a new episode of Family Guy based on the idea that there might be parallel universes outside of ours, and all after watching a documentary on it.

Good job Seth!

I swear, one of my husband's favorite things to do after a movie is go on (for hours, depending on the film) about how unrealistic it was and how this or that is not even possible and...and...and...
If Hollywood gets help from smarty-pants scientists, what's he going to find to rant about?!
    : )

Kids get taunted for being smart in school. The same people who did the taunting are the same ones who shit on science as adults. Seems like nobody wants the unanswered questions to be answered.

Whenever I watch a film that I particularly dislike, I find that I tear it apart based on inconsistencies and plausibility, historical accuracy, etc. While entertainment should be just that, entertainment, I think that over the last several years we've been getting smarter as an audience due to increases in technology. We take for granted how far CG has come, we're always looking for the next best thing. Shouldn't we jump at the chance for entertainment to be more intellectually valuable?

We must also remember that entertainment for many people is a spiritual thing; we shouldn't focus solely on fact and relevance. Fantasy has its part to play.

He's right. Science IS undervalued and degraded, especially in America. Our education system is iffy at best, considering the amount of people who truly think creationism or intelligent design is a science and should be taught in class.

I think improving the scientific accuracy of the media should be interesting, I love to wax intellectual about "could that really happen" when watching movies or reading comics. My friends and I are huge nerds so we can go on for hours. Mythbusters helps out a lot in that area too!

Funny thing is, Seth MacFarlane is an atheist. I never knew that before reading that on Wikipedia. I love Family Guy.

I love Seth McFarlane. His shows are intellectual but easy to watch for the general public. Can't wait for the Cleveland spin-off

Right on! Now if we can also just tackle the proliferation of pseudoscience in the media. Oh what a beautiful day it will be be when we no longer have TV detectives who solve crimes using mental powers, ghost hunters creeping around in the dark with night vision goggles (and NEVER finding anything!), and "psychics" taking up whole hours on CNN with Larry King.

    Please...

For anyone interested in scientific skepticism, check out CSI (no, not the show, the organization), Committee for Skeptical Inquiry

If everything can be explained in black and white what becomes of the mysteries of life? Fantasy is what keeps us dreaming and takes our minds off whatever is bothering us.

good, a kick for education is always beneficial, no matter the age. i think that is one of our biggest problems, people seem to think once they graduate from college they know it all and life will teach them the rest. i call shenanigans. people of all ages should continually learn and challenge their minds

It's about time Hollywood decided to make being smart cooler than being slutty, maybe it will bring our society back from the edge of self-destruction.

    Go Jesus!

In theater and art there is a place for fantasy and a place for reality but in either case theres a place for accuracy.

My biggest gripe with movies is when people aren't speaking the language they ought to be.

Like in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3: Turtles in Time, they went back to feudal Japan and everyone spoke English???

I don't like how important people are just because they are in entertainment. As if what he and Wanda Sykes has to say is the OMG better because of who they are.

It's just funny that Parallel Universe is believable because someone that people think is smart made a documentary about it.

There's so much satire in this someone should create a movie.

I hate it when I watch something and I know that it's impossible based on mere fact. So then ya have to switch to "fantasy mode" or something! Yeah, lovely. Yes, writers, research the things you write about, PLEASE!

I watched a program on the history channel recently about parallel universes, and the 4 different types. Good stuff. Messes with my head a little though...

What I find is that people tend to be afraid to have a different opinion or view. They seem to be afraid to be different. I thought we got over that in the 60's. Each generation has their heroes and most pick either a celebrity or a high paid jock to be their hero no matter that neither graduated high school. No one wants Einstein or Hawkins as heroes or mentors. They say that things from the media are written on a third grade level. And, I agree, most news articles go after a person's emotions rather than a person's sense of, or need for rational facts. Read the comments on news articles and you will see most are trying to be clever with commonly held beliefs rather than having a completely dissenting view or passionate thoughts on the subject.

To me Peter Griffin is cool, but Stewie ROCKS!!! Go, my man, Stewie. You da man, um boy er kid er, um child. OK, whatever, you are a big brain in that football shaped head. Ya gotta love a guy like that!
