A US-Russian team of researchers has pieced together most of the genome of a woolly mammoth, Nature journal reports.
The experts extracted DNA from samples of mammoth hair to reconstruct the genetic sequence of this Ice Age beast.
Though some stretches are missing, the researchers estimate that the genome is roughly 80% complete.
The work could provide insights into the extinction of the mammoth and also resurrects questions about the viability of cloning long-dead species.
The scientists were aided in their task by the fact that several deep-frozen carcasses of woolly mammoths have been dug out of the permafrost in Siberia.
These conditions are ideal for the preservation of hair, which is a preferred source for the extraction of ancient DNA.

I don't think they should clone a Wooly Mammoth. I think they should adopt one from a shelter or Wooly Mammoth rescue.

If they start cloning extinct animals, its possible, that we will end up like Jurassic Park, or worse...
*conspiracy alert*

Scientists can good with their expierimentation projects, and research and what not, but they need to stick to solving dieases, solving world hunger, and invent revolutionary objects that would needed/useful for the future...

They went extinct for a reason.
But it would be cool to clone them to study them but definitely not to let them back into the wild.
-
yeah clone them just to make them suffer through global warming... nice try einstein.

im conflicted... id love to see a Mammoth irl, along w/ MANY other extinct animals, like the dodo. but if this fell into the wrong hands, I.E. the Government, horrible unethical things can/will be done with it...
-
Hell yeah. It's going to be like.... Ice Age Park. Just get in some Saber Tooth Tigers and some freaky birds and we've got the next big thing on our hands.

The ability to reincarnate an extinct species is truly amazing. But why would we want to do that?
It's unbelieveable that our science has almost arrived at the point that would allow the wooly mammoth to walk the earth again. That's an unprecedented accomplishment. Having the ability and knowledge to accomplish this is worthwhile.
But it's a bad idea to actually do it. What kind of life would that be for the mammoth? Born for the sole purpose of living your life in a cage; being examined and gawked over? No mate? No anything?
That would be morally wrong. No living thing deserves that. And if the plan is to make a pair and recreate the species then where in the world would we put them? They're not exactly going to respect fences and they're too big to stop.
My hats off to the scientists. I'd like to see the project completed. But once done, please file it. This would be criminally unfair to the animal.

If they do this they have to name it something amazing.
I mean 'Dolly' the sheep?
How sucky.
It has to be called

If it's a success, then millions of people from the public are going to want to see it. I would. But wouldn't it be distressing for the mammoth?
-
This should be done! It'll just show the power of science and also open doors for new research on near to extinct species.
-
aah, imagine what a baby mammoth would look like, gamboling around. I bet it'd freak out its elephent parents...
-
i think that one problem with cloning animals is that there are only a few samples we could clone from, so we would just have very inbred animals.

I can't even begin to try to explain how utterly wrong this is. The words "crimes against nature" come to mind.

Finally... I just can't wait. I really don't see what you all are making noice for, saying not to clone or "we will end up like Jurassic Park, or worse.." or "They went extinct for a reason". You know if the human race was going extinct I bet that you all would be in the front of the line waiting to be clone or do something of such importance. You'll are two tongue. Clone all the way....... (but) care, yes, we must be.

satanskidney has it exactly right! Why in the world would You clone an Ice Age species when We're about to cook Ourselves & every other living organism bigger than a bacteria off the planet?!?

I hear they plan on giving one to Putin for his next birthday.

Like Dr. Ian said, "Life will find a way". Jurassic park was my favorite childhood movie, What a cool article.
