Right now with all of the lay offs that I continue to hear about I can't see this problem getting any better. What really sucks is that this is so close to the holiday season. Also since so many people are going to need food from the food banks the food banks are going to be stretched thin and in need of donations from anyone who can afford to give to them.
-
All so that fat fuck's stock point can go up half a percent... Go Bu$hCo. Go.
-
Food banks are serving double the amount of people they were last year. I'll be giving my bag of groceries next week. Do I think it will get worse? Unfortunately, yes I do.
-
That's why I started eastcoasthydro.com to give people access to grow their own food. Even a small home garden can produce enough food to live off of.
Grow your own!

I like how those two ladies in line in the picture are overweight.
Perhaps we should eat less as a culture.
-
I don't think it is how much some eat as much as the crap that is in what we eat that makes some overweight.
-
I think that "we" (myself included) don't pay enough attention to the hunger issue. Unfortunately it only seems like this is going to get worse so if your able to give some food to your local food bank.
-
I first want to agree with the encouragement of growing your own food. Secondly, I will say that it is not all corporate fault...YOU the CONSUMER are just as guilty. People didn't bitch enough about domestic automakers meeting the needs of gas conscious consumers in a timely manner and kept buying 20mpg and less vehicles... more layoffs. Didn't bitch enough about the Corn Ethanol....higher food cost. Etc.... When you become too dependent on the government and corporations that run the world, this is where you find yourself. Learn a trade, become self sufficient, grow your own food, make your own domicile...and you will never find yourself hungry, homeless, or without money. Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach him to fish, and he eats for a lifetime.
-
well im not that surprise to see that. i think people don't get to eat right because of the lost of money. they r losing their jobs .. that means no money no food ...yeah thats bad but as long we lose money we go hungry
-
If all these poor people can just hang on a little longer I'm sure the money will trickle down pretty soon. The republicans promised that the wealthy will be sharing the wealth soon. Boy I can hardly wait.
-
they better remember to get their free dr. pepper.
all joking aside, this is appauling.

i use food banks every now and then. the salvation army is awesome, a months worth of food for free. then when i can afford it i donate back. the cycle continues.

I believe this has been a long time coming and NO, it's not Bush's fault. To me this is inflation gone unchecked for the past 30 years and wages have gone unchecked, unions have gone unchecked, corporations profits gone unchecked, poor management, too many layers of extremely expensive management, managers with million dollar salaries and million dollar umbrellas in case they get fired and on and on it goes.
Corporations don't just look at their profit, they look at percentage growth in profit. If the percentage growth has not increased to their satisfaction then usually something is cut and that something is more often than not, quality. Quality in American goods is almost an oxymoron.
Case in point, Harley-Davidson the "ALL American made Bike" with parts made in Taiwan, Korea, China and Pakistan. They are assembled here in the US and maybe the motors and frames are made here in the US, but that is about it. Go to any Harley shop, look at the after-market items like mirrors, pegs, hand grips, etc and it will say on one side "All American Made" on the other side it will say "Made in Pakistan".
Wonder why corporations take their companies overseas? The wages are far less, the workers are grateful for having the work, insurance is less and there is no workers comp, therefore profits can soar and the fat keep getting fatter.
Profits can go only so far here in the US but management gets bigger, quality gets worse to pay for the increases the bosses want. The cars keep falling apart, they are built to last 5 years tops. I've paid $20k for a Dodge Durango only for the engine to fail at 85k miles with regular maintenance. It was well known to create sludge in the engine at 85K miles.
Used to be able to buy a nice house for $20k, now you can't buy a car that lasts more than 5 years for $20K. What is wrong with this picture?
Management keeps sucking the quality out of a product to keep the profits high. Soon that house of cards collapses just like it has done with the big 3 auto makers. Everyone knows foreign made is better quality.
It is cheaper to pay litigation for poor workmanship than make a better car. The big 3 auto manufacturers could have been making fuel efficient, hydrogen cars and electric cars for years but they have kept us dependent on oil. I've heard technology is available to have a 100 mile/gallon engine but the oil companies have kept it secret.
It's not the American worker at fault, Hell no. It is the management that sucks the companies dry. Flying in corporate jets to Congress to beg for money, amazing gall.

Not a single person should go hungry in America, citizen or not!
-
every person in this country should know not only what hunger feels like , but starvation too . 1 in 8 are "hungry" huh ? get a life .
-
why wouldnt i expect college grads to be in the same boat? america has a long way to go for progress in tons of areas... hunger and education both included on that list.
-
Thanks Yoshi for bringing this article to light. I have worked with organizations to feed the homeless and needy for years and it is important for all to remember that hunger in America has always been and will always be an issue. It just happens to be worse now, because of our economic crisis. Thankfully, I still have a job and will continue to donate and help when possible.
For those who have it, now is the time to share it.
Maybe this would be a good time to stop our gov't from subsidizing for farmers not to grow.

Guilty as charged. I have an extensive college education, but I am very handicapped, and I am so thankful to the mission house for the meals when life goes wrong and the food just isn't there. Of course I am on a fixed income, but most of the people I see there aren't losers, they just came in to some hard times.
All I can say is thank you for anyone that is gracious to give in this time when food is so expensive, because some of us aren't making ends meet.
-
This is sad news but this will teach a lot of Americans valuable lessons, especially the children.

I don't think we will see any of Geroge Bush and Co's people in line or any Senators or Represenatives for that matter, but if they don't bring jobs back to this country they may need to get in line themselves. That is probably the only way they will fix this country, is if they begin to suffer like the rest of the people in this country.
-
When we come to grips with this crisis more people should find it easier to empathize with those less fortunate. A degree should be issued to everyone that learns how to help each other through this. No university offers this course.

awww. now i feel twice as bad that i'm gaining weight.
-
one in eight people are not going hungry in america. people are visiting food banks or resorting to food stamps, perhaps, but that's hardly the same thing. i mean, that implies that they're being fed. i don't wish to detract from their plight, but this title is totally hyperbolic.
-
So.. i guess 1 in 8 Americans might not be as obese? Hoooray!
But yeah, i think this will be a good lesson for all of us..
But i feel bad for the little kids.I think education is a more important issue though...

This is really bad news for America, but it is not surprizing. In our madness for whealth, we Americans have forgotten the basic tenents of each individuals responsibliety to those less fortunate.
How could a supposedly majority Christian Nation forget the basic teachings of Christ to care for those in need amongst us?
The good news is that Obama has a heart and is a good Christain which gives me hope for all of the needy people in America and the world. America needs to lead the world in caring for its own people as an example of our convictions.
We also need to be giving to other peoples in the world and forgiving toward our enemies.-
