Teachers drop the Holocaust to avoid offending Muslims, going too far for political correctness?

Schools in the UK are dropping the Holocaust from history lessons to avoid offending Muslim pupils, a Government backed study has revealed.

It found some teachers are reluctant to cover the atrocity for fear of upsetting students whose beliefs include Holocaust denial.

There is also resistance to tackling the 11th century Crusades - where Christians fought Muslim armies for control of Jerusalem - because lessons often contradict what is taught in local mosques.

The findings have prompted claims that some schools are using history 'as a vehicle for promoting political correctness'.

It found some teachers are dropping courses covering the Holocaust at the earliest opportunity over fears Muslim pupils might express anti-Semitic and anti-Israel reactions in class.

The researchers gave the example of a secondary school in an unnamed northern city, which dropped the Holocaust as a subject for GCSE coursework.

The report said teachers feared confronting 'anti-Semitic sentiment and Holocaust denial among some Muslim pupils'.

"But the same department deliberately avoided teaching the Crusades at Key Stage 3 (11- to 14-year-olds) because their balanced treatment of the topic would have challenged what was taught in some local mosques."

A third school found itself 'strongly challenged by some Christian parents for their treatment of the Arab-Israeli conflict-and the history of the state of Israel that did not accord with the teachings of their denomination'.

You can see that this is cross referenced by the Daily Mail in the UK and the Fox interview lines up with the facts. I am looking into a source making an independent video for me on this topic.

Religious enthusiasts can not be allowed to dictate what we teach our children. To deny evolution or the holocaust, to appease ignorant superstitions, is repulsive to any rational individual.

  •

Religion now wants to control education, and to tell what history should be learned and what not to be learned....the Holocaust plays a big part in modern society, and to remember the millions of people who died...it should be remembered for all eternity, regardless of religion, religion strikes yet again...

  •

there is a difference in allowing an open discussion on all the versions of history that all cultures may teach, and omitting those portions of history entirely. to deny the past is the first step to repeating those mistakes in our future. that teachers, of all people, should be the perpetrators of this kind of "forgetfulness" is the most disgusting thing about this entire article.

the most important thing we must learn in school is about what happend in the past so we know how everything is how it is now.

    That's insane.

But sorry, complaining about this when you're a Christian complaining about schools teaching tolerance and anti-bullying about gays, or teaching anything that doesn't fit your worldview, is equally insane--you are no better!

    Absolutely ridiculous.

History is history. It happened. It is what it is. Perhaps teachers should teach their students that the sky is green while they're at it.
It's not like the holocaust was some insignificant blip on the radar some 2000 years ago - it hasn't even been a CENTURY since it happened. Not only was it monstrous - it teaches us a lesson today about the horror of extreme institutionalized prejudice, scapegoating, and the horrific things a charismatic leader can make his/ her people do, if the people are not willing to think for themselves. Among other things.
I could go on, but I'm pressed for time. You get my drift.
I'm sure most feel the same way, anyway.

Oh, and how exactly does it "offend Muslims?"

Of course the holocaust should be taught. I do find it hilarious, that Fox News, the channel of OMG WHY ARE WE NOT TEACHING PRAYER IN SCHOOLS AND OMG THIS IS A CHRISTIAN COUNTRY AND OMG IT'S CHRISTMAS NOT 'THE HOLIDAYS!!!' is outraged about the influence of religion in schools and government.

    Absolutely hilarious.

We should always speak and know the truth, it is the only way to better the world. If we are in denial we can not change - and in today's world there is much need for change.

I'm still trying to figure out the political correctness of all this

  •

This would be fine as long as it wasn't a required course and they changed the name to "Partial History course designed not to offend Islam."

If history is in disagreement with what's taught in the Mosque, seems to me the Mosque should explain that - not the teacher.

I question the accuracy of this article. Can't be govt policy.

This is absolutely ridiculous; I don’t see at all why anyone outside the Muslim community would want to deny that the holocaust happened. And even entertain this request seriously. For that matter I can't see why anyone in the Muslim community would care so much about this topic since they didn't have anything to do with it directly. History teachers, of all the teachers should know the precarious situation they put themselves into when they allow external pressure affect the spread of knowledge.

History in school, i feel also is understated in its importance, and I feel that even the teachers themselves sell it short. Its much more important than most people I know realize, people think its boreing and all we are doing is reading about what some guy did before them, and it doens't affect them directly. But when your country is in trouble at some point and some man comes along and promisis that he can fix everything if you give him lots of power don't be surprised when he try's to take over the world and commit genocide.

perhaps these pathetic little religion addicts want to have a rerun of that atrocity on THEIR people?? if they don't they'd better learn to face history. no better, no worse than christians in mississippi making teachers use the words 'change over time' instead of 'evolution.'

That woman assumed that Sweden and Denmark would ban holocaust education before England, just because their governments provide for their people.

Denmark, remember, was where the papers published images of Mohommed, just to exercise their free speech.

A government that spends a lot of money taking care of its citizens is not necessarily Orwellian people... A government that installs cameras on all of its streets, however, is.

Can we get a proper source for this? I mean, just because this time Fox is reinforcing the stereotypes most of you have obviously developed, it doesn't suddenly make the news agency credible.

wow. instead of dropping the holocaust and the crusades, why not add the intifada and other important muslim historical moments to the curriculum. subtractive education is always the wrong answer.

@vladrath Not that I particularly agree with this, but I think the argument made by some within the Muslim community is that as bad as the Holocaust was, it seems to get more attention than other mass-murders (Stalin killing ~20 million russians for example). Normally this wouldn't matter, but considering that western guilt over the holocaust is widely accepted (by everyone) as one of the determining factors for the creation of the state of Israel, some become skeptical when the holocaust is repeatedly mentioned. They think that the reason it gets more publicity than other such massacres is because Israel uses the memory of the holocaust to keep the world feeling guilty so that it can continue with its unlawful occupation of Palestinian land.
