Will these stop you smoking?

Image...
Eleven gruesome pictures will show the damage tobacco can do. Experts hope they will scare smokers into quitting.
Britain is the first country in the EU to introduce the graphic photo warnings. They appear on packs that have been manufactured since yesterday.

That is gross. All of the images are quite shocking. But I'm not convinced that just slapping them on cigarette packs are going to have the desired effect. I'm sure that it will turn a few people away, but not the smoking massive.

No of course this isn't going to work. It might have some sort of very small impact on would-be smokers but will have no impact whatsoever on current smokers.

I wonder if they made that guy grow his 'tache to enhance the effect........

They've put me off growing my facial hair any longer or wearing cravats, if that helps.

Come on these types of images are an outrage and should not be put on billboards. My three year old see this she will have bad dreams. No I have to say this is shocking and shows us the 1% who suffer this kind of trauma because of smoking. I will be writing to government about this it moves beyond limits of proportional advertising.

Ugh, that's horrible (and so is that bizarre moustache). Then again, I'm a non-smoker. It might discourage me from starting, but I've no idea whether it'd make me give up if I was already addicted..

I think we all agree on the fact that this is not going to stop the hard core smokers. But if this can stop non-smoker to start smoking then I'm up for it.

if you have a tv or don't live under a rock you know what smoking does to you. i tried smoking and didn't like it and never picked it up again. i've herd that your first smoke doesn't hook you but if the first one didn't hook you and you know of the dangers why do it again?

Umm.. gross! I've grown up on those commercials so I would say get the kids while they're young. Once I saw what drunks, alcohol, and smoking could do I've never picked up the habit.

Now if they could only get the sound of a hacking smokers cough to play when you pull out a cigarette.

They had a similar campaign running in Australia, with similar type images on packs and commercials. Until some smart viewers pointed out that these had all been doctored (eg. photoshopped). Even the TV commericals had some serious effects done to make out they were real.. to the untrained eye. After they were busted on this they were either taken off or had to state that the images were representations and not actual cases.
I believe it when I see it.... now where are my smokes..

A couple years ago they had messages in big bold print on packs of cigarettes that went a little something like "SMOKING WILL KILL YOU!!!" But no amount of Bold Arial Black text can do these pictures justice.

I think the best way to stop smoking is to raise taxes the big tobacco companies who will therefore up the price of cigarettes. Most people know that smoking will kill you but when the cost becomes worse than the benefit, they will stop.

I quit smoking a little less than three years ago for many reasons. But one of them was that our state raised the taxes on cigarettes so high. It was one of the best choices I ever made and I smoked for about 10 years before that. So, anyone can do it. It's just a matter of motivation.

I do think that people who force other people (like kids) to breathe in their smoke are messed up. If you do this, please stop.

ignorance is bliss. So many people live their lives in denial. Its so much easier to get thru life that way, never have to think about anything. I'm 28 and smoked for 13 yrs., haven't had one in almost 2 yrs. Seeing what I see at work made me quit. (paramedic for a city fire department)

I always said I'd give up when the price of 20 fags went above £5. When the price got too much I just started smoking roll ups which are loads cheaper, and then when they put all the horrible warnings over the packets I just started buying more tobacco when I went abroad. Foreign warnings just don't have the same impact...

Sadly, I think it'll take more than some pretty nasty pictures to make me quit.

Gross, yes, but what they don't show you is the kick ass, solid gold, elvis sunglasses that he got for sending in 2,000 dollars in Malboro money.

No, nasty pictures will not make people stop smoking. Sometimes shock value has no value.

Every time I see some smuggled underground footage from PETA of the horrible abuse chickens endure in factory farms I make a vow to NEVER eat chicken again.

That vow lasts all the way up until lunch time when I go to Wendy's and order a #6 Spicy Chicken sandwhich combo.

Addiction (even to Wendy's combo meals) is far, far more powerful than logic.

That's what some of these anti-smoking groups don't seem to be realizing.

As a nurse, trust me. There is nothing worse than 'Head and Neck Cancers". Now smoking is linked to 15 cancers. when I worked for Hospice, I was shocked at the number of people there who smoked. If the Hospice work did not stop them, nothing would. Seeing parts of peoples faces falling off is real. Nothing photo shopped about it. Just google it and you will fine a lot of cancers of head and neck due to many tobacco products, not just smoking.
