Analog Ghosts: Teenanger are a raucous, rootsy garage rock band from Toronto, Canada who wanted to get their music and that of their friends' bands released, but they didn't have the resources. Then it hit them: what is cheaper and easier than cassette tape? They bought a professional grade cassette recorder on ebay for 50 bucks and formed Telephone Explosion Records in 2007. They began recording and releasing limited run albums on tape that also come with mp3 download codes. T.E.R. and other D.I.Y. labels like them are still using this seemingly defunct medium, not only for its accessibility, but also for a sound quality that lends itself to the distorted aesthetic of punk and noise music.

    • I have to admit that I find the idea of using a dated format as a barrier to the casual listener kind of intriguing. If one works hard at producing art it seems only fair that the consumer should put some effort into the process as well (...even if it only involves being in the right place at the right time in order to take in the experience).

      What's next? A VHS revival along the lines of "Be Kind, Rewind?"
