Drugs reveal another possible cause of aging

Early but intriguing research on mice suggests a new mechanism of aging, and possibly a way to stall it.Drugs designed to target one aspect of aging also seem to help repair DNA damage and regulate gene activity, preventing them from going haywire with the stresses of time.
"In principle, we now could have a way of reversing the effects of aging," said David Sinclair, a Harvard University gerontologist and co-founder of Sirtris Pharmaceuticals, a company best-known for its development of an experimental drug called resveratrol.
Resveratrol and similar compounds activate an enzyme called SIRT1. The enzyme rejuvenates mitochondria, the machines that power our cells. Mitochondrial breakdown has been associated with many age-related diseases, including heart disease, diabetes and dementia. Several labs in addition to Sirtris are researching compounds that target mitochondria.

@Pamela,
I completely agree. Why would anyone want to live forever in the world we have? The Earth will just become more populous and over crowded because no one would be dying, which would just lead to more wars and famine and such. I'd rather just have my time here and let the younger generations move up in the world after I'm gone.

This world is already getting overcrowded and depleted of resources. Perhaps we should consider solving that problem before we decide that we're ready to extend the natural life span.

Extending life might not be the goal here, but having the quality of the our natural life be good in the later years. We all know how fragile those years are. I would be fine living those years vibrant and strong, and having the same number of days as I would have beforehand.

Hope they do develop this soon. Especially for people who have memory issues, and if there can be help for nerve repair via activating the mitochondria.
What they said:
"We have a long way to go before applying this to humans," said University of Southern California gerontologist Valter Longo, who was not involved in the study. The exact role of gene activation in aging is not entirely clear. And while Sinclair's work showed that cancer-prone mice lived 40 percent longer than usual after SIRT1 stimulation, they didn't test its benefits on healthy mice.

Why are drugs that save us from death ok and drugs that can rush us toward it, or just give us a rush, not ok?
Can I no longer make that decision myself?

With every "miracle drug" out on the market, there are the side effects to consider. If this drug does what it says, then I wonder what lies underneath in terms of side effects. Possible stroke? Massive blood clots? Hypertension? The dreaded third nipple?

There is just one big problem. If in twenty years we will run out of space on earth and will need an additional planet on which to surviuve, then how can any pharmaceutical company mass produce this for the common people. I suggest that if any resveratrol is ever produced in quantities that will in fact stop[ and perhaps reverse the aging processes, I would guarantee that the Government will take over and control the production to be used only for the political scum and the elite scum in our populous. You as a citizen will never see it in usable quantities.

I don't think figuring out how to make people live longer will be public knowledge if it does or ever will exist. To powerful of something blare all over the media.

This is the start of anagathic drugs. Drugs that slow down or reverse aging.
Plenty of money to be made off of that drug.

I bet if they come up with a genuine drug to reverse aging, they could charge whatever prices they want and people would still buy it.
I know I would. - 1 year ago
