Food Irradiation: Safe or scary?

The FDA describes Food Irradiation as a "safe measure" that: "is a process in which food products are exposed to a controlled amount of radiant energy to kill harmful bacteria such as E. coli O157:H7, Campylo-bacter, and Salmonella. The process also can control insects and parasites, reduce spoilage, and inhibit ripening and sprouting.

Is it worth it?
Irradiation damages the quality of food.
· Irradiation damages food by breaking up molecules and creating free radicals. The free radicals kill some bacteria, but they also bounce around in the food, damage vitamins and enzymes, and combine with existing chemicals (like pesticides) in the food to form new chemicals, called unique radiolytic products (URPs).
· Some of these URPs are known toxins (benzene, formaldehyde, lipid peroxides) and some are unique to irradiated foods. Scientists have not studied the long-term effect of these new chemicals in our diet. Therefore, we cannot assume they are safe.
· Irradiated foods can lose 5%-80% of many vitamins (A, C, E, K and B complex). The amount of loss depends on the dose of irradiation and the length of storage time.
· Most of the food in the American diet is already approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for irradiation: beef, pork, lamb, poultry, wheat, wheat flour, vegetables, fruits, shell eggs, seeds for sprouting, spices, herb teas. (Dairy is already pasteurized). A food industry petition currently before the FDA asks for approval for luncheon meats, salad bar items, sprouts, fresh juices and frozen foods. Another petition before the USDA asks for approval for imported fruits and vegetables.
· Irradiation damages the natural digestive enzymes found in raw foods. This means the body has to work harder to digest them.
· If unlabeled, raw foods that have been irradiated look like fresh foods, but nutritionally they are like cooked foods, with decreased vitamins and enzymes. The FDA allows these foods to be labeled "fresh."
· Irradiated fats tend to become rancid.
· When high-energy electron beams are used, trace amounts of radioactivity may be created in the food.

    • BTW I do support going to the LOCAL farmers market when possible. Ours doesn't give away anything for free. But what you buy is really yummy. AND it supports YOUR COMMUNITY!!! Important!

    • After reading about the woman who had a worm in her brain from eating food with a parasite in it last week, well it seems like not a bad idea.
Add that to the fact that we take supplements because cooking etc. changes the nutrition in some foods.

    • I would like to hear some balanced information. This issue is so emotional it is difficult to determine where the truth rests. I doubt it is as bad, or as good, as people claim.

    • This is a death in disguise! csmonut is correct the FDA is not trustworthy,we will be eating a beautiful red apple with the nutrientional value of cardboard.Totally by design, using food as a weapon.

      Say No,to weaponized food!

      Scientific studies have shown :
      Increased chromosomal damage in animals and human; Increased frequency of cell mutations; Formation of mutant bacteria;
Increased frequency of tumours, reduced survival rate, and other health problems in animals; Increased carcinogens and other toxins in food, such as: Benzene, Formaldehyde, Octane, Butane, and Methyl Propane. (Benzene and formaldehyde are classified carcinogens); Formation of new and potentially dangerous compounds in foods called Unique Radiolytic Products, which have yet to be enumerated and identified. The higher the dose of radiation, the greater the number of U.R.P.s formed. One of these, 2-DCB, has recently been proven to cause cellular and genetic damage in human and rat cells; and FI causes the formation of free radicals.
Vitamin content is reduced by up to 96% depending upon the food item and other factors. Vitamins affected are A, B, C, E and K. Also, amino acids and polyunsaturated fats can be depleted. *

    • Shop local, meet the farmers, they will give you free food!
      Check out the link
you can put one in your pocket
      you can eat one
      you can throw one away

and my cell phone is next to my head a few hours a week.
I think it is cool that a cantaloupe can sit for 6 weeks half ripe.

    • God I'm sick of all this eco-crap on current...
You've probably eaten plenty of irradiated food already. You're fine. Stop your bitching already.

I wish I was not horrified by this and could trust blindly that food sold in a grocery store is safe, but I just can't, because it just isn't. You are not the only one that wants to ignore such possibilities and I wish you all health.

    • The FDA is not trustworthy.
Irradiated foods have been approved, and furthermore, they don't have to be labeled, "Irradiated."

As for the "free radicals" the cobalt creates, free radicals are linked to many types of cancers.

As if our soils are not poor enough in minerals because of over-cultivation, now we get foods that have had their vitamins irradiated and their little molecules scrambled. Now we don't know what we're eating!

The only way to stop this type of crap is to gather the studies that have been done, get all our ducks in a row, and start bombarding our elected officials.

    • Even scarier:
"Irradiation covers up problems that the meat and poultry industry should solve"

Is E. Coli and Salmonella really that dangerous? Or are we being trained to trust that the FDA is concerned about our health?
