Anti-ageing face creams ‘don’t work’, say scientists

Many anti-ageing creams and vitamin supplements are a waste of money, researchers say.

Anti-oxidants - the 'must-have' ingredients of face creams and pills that claim to hold back the hands of time - have little or no effect, a study found.

The British researchers said that rather than spending money on vitamin-loaded potions and pills, people who want to retain a youthful look should instead concentrate on eating healthy foods in sensible amounts and exercising.

Dr David Gems, of University College London, said: 'It is not the anti-oxidant content of your food that is critical, it is that you don't eat too much of it.

'And get plenty of exercise. Get a dog and take it for a walk.'

Dr Gems' work debunked the widely-held belief that anti-oxidants are key in the fight against ageing.

The decades-old theory states that our tissues and cells are under attack by free radicals - dangerous oxygen molecules produced when food is turned into energy.

Anti-oxidants, such as vitamins C and E, 'mop up' the attackers, limiting the amount of damage done.

The theory has led to millions taking daily vitamin supplements to hold back the hands of time and has spawned a plethora of expensive anti-oxidant-based anti-ageing creams.

Now, it seems, it may be wrong.

    • Yes, the life expectancy did rise. I was watching a Discovery Channel program, can't remember what it was called. But it pointed out that what your grandparents experienced, like a sickness or low nutrition, that it would actually effect your gene's development in a positive way. It seemed odd, but I think it could be a possibility.

    • I bet your dad has good 'genes' like my husband. He works circles around people half his age. I dont think we have to spend huge amounts of money, just use common sense. My husbans mother lived to 103 but his father died at 90 from artery disease. They married LATE in life also. And we just had a beautiful family member die a month ago from a brain tumor. There are a lot of factors but only 60 or 70 years ago our life span was 47,now it is in the 70s as average.

    • Ya know, it's funny. My dad who is 58 still looks in his early 30s. I'm 25, and I'm asked if he's my brother every time I go anywhere with him. My dad grew up in Texas, in the sun nearly everyday, and we've been in IL for more than 20 years, the man's neck is STILL red. It seems funny to me that They say this or They say that, when my dad did nothing to fight aging and still has no gray hair what-so-ever. He refuses to dye it, and he makes sure to shave since that's the only place there IS any white or gray. Anti-aging doesn't really matter. There is no fighting aging, unless you have a large amount of funds to get re-shingled every ten years or so. There's no miracle cure. Sure, I hate the fact that I WILL get old and that I WILL age and not look the same as I do now; but it's a part of life. I could spend a large amount of money for anti-aging stuff, some of the best on the market, but what's the point in all of it? We all age, and there's no fighting time, no matter the claim on a jar of the next "miracle cure".

    • I thought this had been known for some time..? Every year some new superfood or super ingredient gets hyped up as this miracle cure or the elixir against ageing. Amazing the public are often still so trusting and uncynical.

    • I know that a good diet (veggies and fruit and protein) and exercising mind and body are the main 'antiagers'...at least in what I have done/studied through Dr. Oz (latest studies on peoples of the Mediteranean diet) has seemed to help a lot along with a LOT of good fluids to wash out toxins (NOT Coke :)
With that said, I have found the Obagi System works well for me and others. True, there is a lot of SH$& out there too.

    • Who is surprised by this really? The anti-aging cream ads are full of dodgy statistics and "scientific" diagrams to dupe people into spending stupid amounts on products.
