“Arm yourself….with knowledge!”

Captain’s Comments

Happy Holidays!
Can you believe it is already December? After the Friday events and tree lighting at Union Square, I can certainly believe it! We achieved a critical mass of our own that evening when everyone crowded in at 6 PM to witness the lighting of the tree. It was indeed a sight to behold with every inch between Stockton, Post, Powell and Geary occupied by shoppers and tree gazers. Other indications of this time of the year are the facts that we have 4 ice skating rinks in town and shoplifting and thefts increase significantly.

Remember all the SAFE shopping tips:
• Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas in public and on transit.
• Be aware of suspicious people. Notify police or security. You may help prevent a crime! Hopefully, someone else may be doing the same for you!
• Be alert, look confident and walk with a purpose!
• Keep keys in your hand when walking to your car or home.
• If shopping after dark, take a friend.
• Leave nothing showing in your car, including packages, bags, electronics and cradles or adapters!
• Limit your use of Ipod or earphones in public. That goes for cell phones too!

      Crimes of Note
It may sound like a joke when you hear the locations, but we actually have had a rash of arson’s in the district and that is no joke. The venues happen to be at construction site portable toilets. The fires have been set in the early morning hours and they go up in smoke in a matter of minutes. The last two incidents occurred on 11/28/08 at 2:45 AM on the 1400 block of Vallejo and also on 11/30/08 just after midnight on the 1200 block of Filbert Street. The SFPD Arson Detail is investigating. There have been at least 4 such incidents in the past few weeks. They are not only an immediate danger and toxic but the needless incidents also divert valuable SFFD resources when responding to such calls.

11/26/08 at 1 AM- An individual went outside of a bar at Geary and Leavenworth to have a smoke when he was joined by four others. Without warning, all four began to beat the victim about the face and head with their fists, possibly as a prelude to robbery. Officers Tina To and Magnus Chow responded to the call and saw the victim running up the block, being chased by the four suspects. All four were arrested and booked for aggravated assault and conspiracy.

11/28/08 at 4 PM- Portsmouth Square- A 57 year old male transient with an open bottle of vodka was arrested for chasing and screaming at children near the square’s playground by Beat Officer Tom Cunnane.

11/29/08 at 8:26 AM, 700 block of Sutter. A painter working on a construction site interrupted a burglar inside the building ceiling area. Officers Ben Santana, Tom Cunnane and Alane Baca responded and saw several items laid out by the thief. The officers searched the building until they found him hiding inside the ceiling space. The 30 year old transient was booked for Burglary.

Between 11/29/08 and 11/30/08, four separate cocaine and methamphetamine arrests were made on Geary, Market, Embarcadero and Larkin Streets. Officers Eric Tapang, Kevin Worrell, Brandon Thompson and John Ferrando all made the self initiated arrests of males ranging from 21 years old to 40 years old.

On 11/30/08 at 4:34 PM in Washington Square, Officers Bob Duffield and Dante Giovanelli witnessed a fight between two transient males inside the park. One of the suspects attempted to stab the other with a screwdriver while the other combatant swung a claw hammer as well. The officers interrupted the fight and confiscated the weapons and booked both men for fighting with weapons and aggravated assault. One of the men was on active felony parole.

      Prostitution-
Operations were conducted with Sgt. Arlin Vanderbilt, Officers Milan Kangrga and Officers Rene Nielsen and Matt Sullivan.

11/24/080- 9:30 PM- Post/Larkin: Black male, 32 years from SF arrested for soliciting plainclothes Central Station Officer Mike Kangrga.
