In his Nobel lecture to the Swedish Academy, the 68-year-old Frenchman said an earlier introduction of information technology could even have prevented World War II.
"Who knows, if the Internet had existed at the time, perhaps Hitler's criminal plot would not have succeeded - ridicule might have prevented it from ever seeing the light of day," he said.
Still, the globe-trotting writer noted that access to computers remains a luxury to many in the developing world and said eradicating hunger and illiteracy remain the "two great urgent tasks" of humankind.
"Literacy and the struggle against hunger are connected, closely interdependent," he said. "One cannot succeed without the other. Both of them require, indeed urge, us to act."
I wonder who would've been Hilter's top friends on MySpace...

of course hitler would have failed. the story would be all over current. Japanese would bomb america and america would attack the middle east...
-
I would be inclined to agree, but Bush did get re-elected mind you.
-
You can't compare Bush to Hitler neocongo. Bush was a stupid man with a lot of power. Hitler was a smart man with a lot of power.

Today in 2008 information can leak in very high places and it is interesting what could have happened if so.

I really do not even like seeing a picture of him.
I agree with you Josh. To compare anyone to Hitler is to try and approach the sublimity of Hitler and Nazi Germany.
-
In the modern world of current.
Headline: Hitler plans to destroy Jews, Gypseys, Homosexuals
Comment1: Hitler is a mad man he must be stopped
Comment2: Beware this newspaper has neo-con ties with Washington take it with a pinch of salt
Comment3: Hitler never said anything about cleansing the land he has been misquoted.
Comment4: Bomb Germany into a glass factory!
Comment5: Why are you hating Comment4?
-
The only thing that could have stopped Hitler was action, action by "good men". However "good men" failed miserably.
"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing."
-
Even though Bush rigged both elections and never honestly won. He is comparable if not worse than Hitler as far as I am concerned. So the internet did not stop this drunken maniac which is to bad for mankind, as we are paying now and will pay for many years to come for this idiot's evil greed not to mention all the killing of innocent people worldwide because of him.
-
This is a really rocky summation. After all, much of the Neo-Nazi culture that is still prevalent today is because of the Internet.
It could be argued, I think, that based on this logic it would be just as likely that Hitler would have had MORE followers if the Internet existed.
Let's face it; anyone who's seen newsreel footage from that period can see that many people didn't think the Nazi's were all that terrible until they started invading other countries. Hitler was well established politically before the militaristic drive for territory. Just because information is easily accessible now doesn't mean it's accurate or governed. Things can be spun more easily now than ever before.
I mean, look at the fact that for 8 years we've had the Internet AND George W. Bush/Dick "No I don't answer to anyone" Cheney. Where has the Internet been a benefit to stopping a global power from invading smaller countries based on flawed ideology?

I always wish I could get all the great leader/"influencers" of modern history into a room together and make them smoke weed or take E and debate the reality of things.
Jesus, Hilter, Alexander the Great, Ben Frankilin, maybe even Richard Branson to represent modern achievement...perhaps Muhammad and Buddha and all the other head religious catalyzers as well.
Then make them give me a consensus plan on how to redesign the world as best as possible.
They were all just people kids, just like me and you.
I think the internet is actually the tool that could save/take over the world.
But that's just me...

Against all hopes, 21st century information technology has been used to worsen these types of situations. Take the example of Kenya, an African country not thought to be so prone to trouble as of recently. Last Feb, text messages spread over the country by storm that incited terrible racial violence.

Well internet is not stopping genocide in Darfur. It's not stopping Israeli occupying Palestine, it's not saving people from their regimes. I don't think it would solve anything in 40's. Today we have lots of Hitler's at the power in the countries we don't give a damn about. But new Hitler's are yet to be born. Just let this recesion to develop. People will start to seek for someone to blame and man who will show them someone to blame will gain a lot.
History repeats itself that's in nature of humans. We rarely learn anything.

If internet was created in the time of Hitler for sure all of us we were Nazis why because Hitler was supported by the bankers in Europe, dont believe me investigate this.
the international wankers I mean the bankers who control the federal reserve are the same people who control all the media and they want to take over the internet, it is happening right now but you dont see it.
Seig Heil,Seig Heil, hahahahahahahahahahahaaha
we dont need to look too far, look what is happening in Israel right now, the biggest concentration camp ever build in the world (GAZA) and the corporate media dont say a word about this.-

this comment was slightly surprising to hear coming out of a nobel laureate's mouth..
while it technically isnt a prediction, it reminds me of a couple famously incorrect comments..
http://wilk4.com/humor/humore10.htm
nevertheless, the internet is nothing but a tool..
it has always been.. and will always be.. the humans behind the technology that determine how it is put to use.. the internet, in particular, is an extremely powerful medium that obviously has the potential to do extreme good as well as bad..
to say that people at that time would have been able to confront hitler's propaganda more easily would be giving them undeserved credit.. hitler managed to manipulate his way to power back then and.. however frightening it is to admit this.. would most likely be able to do it again today..
peace..

Apparently it hasn't made China better, Venezuela better or even Iran Better....the Internet would not have stopped Hitler.
-
You have a strange idea j_hammer if you are implying that China is morally or economically superior to the US or majority of the West. Just different forms of the same tyranny. I dont see China on a sublime crusade to subvert and destroy the muslim world.
Then again, has the internet really helped in the west?
You tube saves all?-

The Nazis were experts in brainwashing and mind control.
Joseph Goebbels and could have probably maximized the internet for propaganda purposes.
Remember, Hitler was very popular in the US before the war so even this country wasn't immune to his propaganda.
