Using reCaptcha & Digitizing Old Texts & Radio Shows

The reCaptcha service combines the anti-spam functions of a normal Captcha system with a very interesting project, which aims to digitize the contents of old books & newspapers and also of past radio shows, thanks to the human interaction in solving the puzzles.

Basically what you get is the following: as you are asked to solve an image or audio puzzle to complete the sign-up for a forum or a social network, or simply for leaving a comment, you are accomplishing two tasks at the same time.

From one point of view you’re just giving proof to the system that you’re actually a human user and not a potentially dangerous spam software; from an other point of view you’re contributing effectively to digitize a huge amount of texts that still exist just in a paper format, and that the OCR software fail to decipher.
