Q. What values do you hope to instill in your children? We've met your girls, and they seem delightful. You must be very good parents.

Barack: We're very lucky.

Michelle: The urgency of this election has so much to do with children, because there is an advantage our girls have that many other kids don't have. All children come into the world pretty much the same: They're open and eager to learn, and they want to be loved and to feel good about themselves.

Barack: That's why it's important to make sure that you're giving every child in America a shot. I'm fully confident that every parent wants the best for their kid. But not every parent has the resources they need: good schools, affordable healthcare, family-leave policies. No one can force anyone to be a good mom or dad, but government can make sure that all parents have the tools to do it.
