SNL's Paterson Skit Causes a Stir

Live from New York, it's time to mock the disabled!

With Sarah Palin out of the national eye, "Saturday Night Live" turned its satirical guns toward another governor, New York's David Paterson. However, this time the laughs weren't quite as hearty. It's one thing to mock a moose-hunting beauty queen, but quite another to laugh at the visually impaired.

Governor Paterson is a legally blind man who took over for the disgraced Eliot Spitzer earlier this year. SNL's Fred Armisen portrayed Paterson as a bumbling man who is completely unqualified for the position. Funny? The studio audience seemed to like the skit, but many groups are outraged and speaking out.

The National Federation of the Blind issued a statement calling the characterization "absolutely wrong" and criticized the show for playing up the stereotype that blind people are "incapable of simple tasks." Meanwhile, Governor Paterson's office issued a statement that the show should be able to "find a way to be funny without being offensive." Indeed, while comedy is in the eye of the beholder, many of the knee-slappers at Paterson's expense seemed to be, as the New York Post put it, rather "stock." Wandering aimlessly? Confused? One could argue that Mr. Magoo pulled the same gags a lot better 50 years ago.

Funny yes they are, funny?no they're not. Some groups in our great country are allowed a broader interpretation of freedom of speech, I wonder if SNL would be allowed free reign if the politicians they made fun of were DEMOCRATS? I highly doubt. it. Just look how RUSH Limbaugh is attacked. BTW I know this case was an exception to the rule, handicapped are almost as good as Republicans to SNL even if they are Democrats.

    • Watch your mouth, I know Paterson is a Democrat. Where did say he was a Republican, learn how to read. You assumed what I said about SNL being biased meant that I thought he was a Republican? I think you are the moron. I have been watching SNL since 1976, and they make fun of alot more Republicans than they do Democrats is all I was saying. They also made fun of Clinton. But not with the nastiest that they made fun of both the BUSHES or Dan Qyale or the first one they satire'd NIXON. So learn to read and watch your mouth. The point is even though he is a DEMOCRAT making fun of a blind mans appearance is low class. All I wrote were the bottom three lines, I never even spoke about the Governor, I was commenting on what I think of SNL. The author of the article spoke on the Governor. It is common sense that an African American Governor of NY> would be Democrat, I thought you guys were smarter than this. Opps my bad I will put road signs on everything from now on so as not hurt your LIL feelings. NOT!!! Learn how to read!!!

      Weak my ass, how many black Governors from NY would be Republican?Reading between the lines is WEAK. Where did say The GOV was Republican? In fact I didn't even mention the Governor. All I wrote were the bottom three lines. And I was commenting on SNL. Not the GOV. the reporter who wrote the article did that. Talk about third grade.
