Athens Dec 15 2008

Protesters used lasers, huh, against greek law enforcement in an attempt to show force for the death of a teenage boy killed by police two and a half weeks ago.

Those high powered lasers can make someone go blind

Interesting choice of weapons. Actually really smart. You don't need to make extra room for those lasers, so convenient yet can do a lot of damage. Sure the chances of that small dot hitting the eye of an officer isn't great, but a handful of lasers would be that much harder to avoid. And it's not as if the cops can shield their eyes or close them, because if they did then the protesters would have a huge advantage. What good is riot police if they won't use their eyes?

The next day they show up wearing sunglasses.

It must really suck to be a cop during times like these. Enforcing arguably unjust rules on your friends and neighbors.

Rioters using lasers is quite a trip.

I don't get it. They're trying to resolve a violent problem.... with violence. What is the sense in this?

Since when has sense been part of the protesting process? Senseless actions beget senseless responses.

I hate to be the first to point it out, but for all the cases of historic non-violent protest, someone had to die.

Gandhi, MLK, Jesus, whoever you chose who said to not be violent, they all died for their cause.

It is no wonder why people choose violence.

    fuck it...blind those pigs

Revolutionaries need to also prepare for the future too...

@Cuddlebones + nayajen. Can you really think of many issues that have been solved with peaceful protest?

Millions marched against war in Iraq... Nothing
, for the whole "Make poverty history" ... nothing (apart from the corrupt plan that western companies build African infrastructure in exchange for debt clearance)

Nothing but direct action gets direct results. Politicians must laugh when they see signs outside parliaments. and hippies banging drums.

Don't be naive to think that the world problems can be solved by saying "please". Sometimes governments and issues need a kick in the balls to get things moving.

What else will protesters get a hold of in the future. I see riots getting far more grim in years to come.

I have to applaud the protesters for deciding to use these. But as great as this works there is an easy solution to combat this. Laser safety goggles.

"Around 565 shops were damaged in Athens, causing more than e200 million of damage and ruining the Christmas shopping period."

Yeah, this makes sense. Let's destroy our infrastructure because we totally won't need that after the riots are done.

And this is why police should wear mirror suits.

I've been saying it for years.

This is absolutely crazy, how can this be a demonstration for solidarity for the teenage boy who was killed? More violence isn't the answer; it'll result in more deaths.

Are there pics of them actually being used and not just tested?

Civil disobedience of the future, I'm sure there will be other technological advances for both sides of the law.

wow, that is an awsome photograph. I feel bad for the police though, who're only doing their job - those lasers could blind.

It sounds like highly organised protestors. Laser weapons can't be easy to get hold of.
