Google's Top Searches of 2008

Image...
2008 has been a year of stunning changes, economic chaos and moose hunting governors. To put a fork in it all, Google has put together its yearly snapshot of what was on the world's collective mind. My favorites? The top searched cocktail recipes on the Trendsetters tab (looks like we drank a lot of bad martinis this year in the U.S.) and the "what is" and "who is" lists.

The stuff I find the most fascinating is on the Around the World tab, though. It's a great way to see what's important to people in other countries, or the whole world. YouTube is on just about every country's Most Popular list. No matter where we come from, we all need the occasional laughing baby fix, it seems.

One thing has me stumped: why does Google show up as a top ten search term in so many places? Googling Google? Really? People either really love their toolbar search windows or my grandmother gets around a lot more than I realize. And has access to millions of computers.

Happy New Year, everyone.
