Chrysler LLC confirmed it will idle all manufacturing operations at the end of the day Friday for at least a month in an effort to align production and inventory with U.S. market demand.

The auto maker pointed to tight consumer credit conditions, adding that dealers have lost about 20% to 25% of their sales volume because many willing buyers can't find financing.

Chrysler said the affected employees won't return to work before Jan. 19.

Just in time for the holidays.

    • people can't find financing because they shouldn't be buying financed vehicles anyways.

And stop spending on marketing if you know everyone is strapped for cash and not spending.

    • My main question is how long should the tax payer pay for these companies to survive? With the US auto industry, their problems are decades old, and they haven't resolved them yet.

    • Chrysler already has a couple of electric vehicles that they are supposed to release to the public in 2010. Actually its gonna be to only Californians.... I think. Any way, check it out on their website. They've got the Jeep,Dodge car, and Chryler van. The Dodge EV doesn't look half bad, and considering its an electric vehicle it should laydown some extremely fast 0-60 times.
But yeah, it should not be getting a bail out. I was justing saying that they do have electric vehicles, and that they should start hardcore investing in some, because there is a huge market for it, right?

    • What the hell... that's my photograph being used as the header. I came over here to check out an archived story from a few months back, and the thumbnail on the front page drew my attention immediately; the original series: http://www.notbland.com/images/chrysler/300c.htm

Don't know if it was the most suitable photo to use for this story, but whatever works.

Thank you. It was a fun series overall. Still the most viewed series on my website, 18 months on, even after photographing all sorts of Ferraris and Lamborghinis- everyone keeps coming back to that series. Haha, who knows.

    • I hope this means some serious reflection at their business model and come up with plans to become viable like Toyota and Honda and Lean Green gas powered machines...

    • They have been hand in hand with oil companies and their glory days are over. Good things always come to an end. It looks like Bush will make one of the biggest mistakes of his presidancy, he is going to bail them out hell or high water. Could the two be connected?

Not quite a Phantom, I agree, but still better than a lot of other knock off 300Cs out there. Very tastefully modded, too, when you start to compare it to others.

I would know; that's my photograph they ripped. ;-)

    • the only reason we need chrysler is for the jobs it creates.

it's certainly not for their cars with shitty engineering, shitty build quality, shitty looks, shitty faux-luxury, and shitty gas mileage.

i can think of four major automakers that make similar models, with better overall quality, durability, customer confidence, and operating budgets. one of which now seems to be the number 3 automaker worldwide.

why can't people realize that america will create the jobs it needs. it just needs the puppet strings to be released so new, upstart american automakers can dominate the market with green or near-green vehicles.

no to the bailout! no to rewarding poor business practices.

    • They're not doing this to align supply and demand... but to give the government a taste of what would happen if they close their doors.

An ingenious scheme to show Uncle Sam how much the country needs them.
