Rainforests and fauna in danger

Gazing on the verdant wonders of Gabon and hearing that eco-tourism may be the best way to save them, you may feel the urge to rush out and book a two-week holiday there. Certainly, this soft-edged edition of Natural World makes a strong case for the western African nation as a magical paradise, where lephants hug, gorillas play games of rough-and-tumble and hippos frolic in the surf. It's a good news/bad news storyline, though. Yes, there are big national parks, but loggers, poachers and oil prospectors are all after a piece of the jungle. Ranged against such forces, you wonder how long a well-meaning president and a few ragged-trousered naturalists can hold the line. Best book that holiday quick.

This is a playlist of five videos, each subsequent video launching automatically. I suggest you guys watch the whole thing, it is fascinating and beautifully filmed.

Great series Vierotchka! So beautifully filmed, and such a heart wrenching subject matter. I pray for and visualize our natural world to be nurtured and protected as if our life depends upon it (and it does), and may there be an equitable balance for all in our world so people are not desperate and driven to destroy rather than nurture and help grow that which is essential for all life - we don't need to create another Mars!

My computer is too slow to play videos clearly, but I can get fractured images. The narration came through perfectly. These were great videos with powerful images. By the way, DNA studies have recently shown that the African Forest Elephant is indeed a separate species from the African Savannah Elephant.

Eco-tourism can be a powerful tool to battle destruction of the environment. If local people see an economic value to themselves in preserving their local ecology, they are more likely to do so.

In Costa Rica, there is even a project to replant a cleared area of rain forest outside one of the national parks to give tourists better access to a jungle experience. That is positive progress in the right direction.

There are some very good environmental organizations out there supporting ecological projects to protect flora and fauna around the world, and they deserve our support. I looked up the one mentioned in the video here, the Wildlife Conservation Society, affiliated with the Bronx Zoo in New York City. Here is its website:

Isn't this the way it starts? The rain forests. And some people say we (man) is not responsible for global warming. Right. It can sicken the tummy if you let it. Let us hope with the correct intervention, we can do something

What if the solutions are for mankind to downsize to limit our appetite, be wise in our consumption or to colonize space?

Limiting our appetite for resources and being wise in our consumption of them are great ideas. Space colonization will have to wait for the future I think. In the meantime, we still need to be supporting good environmental and wildlife protection organizations right here on the ground on Earth.

I wish corporations would take the place of elephants, gorillas and other flora and fauna on the threatened species list.

I would then gladly volunteer for aerial corporation hunting if Palin would just sponsor it somewhere besides her wolf-killing-fields in Alaska.

I would love to have someone say, "Nice shot you made on Monsanto, Ino, and that Exxon volley while hanging out of the aircraft was sheer genius!"
