Anti-narcotics education is drummed into Japan's school students and little differentiation is made between "hard" and "soft" drugs. The nation's strict attitude toward illegal substances stems in part to a post World War two amphetamine spike, which saw widespread abuse of the substance after it was sold without a prescription for around a decade.
While legalizing marijuana or using it for medical purposes to treat diseases such as cancer and AIDS has been debated and approved in some western countries, such ideas haven't caught on in Japan.
In one of the country's most infamous busts, Beatle Paul McCartney spent nine days in a Tokyo jail in 1980 after arriving at the capital's airport with a bag of marijuana in his suitcase.

Unless you like to meditate in spartan digs, Japan is
definitely NOT the place to be in jail. I understand that they make one sit in the lotus position all day long on a mat as penitance. Kind of hard on the 6. And not the kind of situation that type A personalities have the emotional tolerance for. Paul at least had some exposure to the Maharishi and Bhuddism when the Beatles traveled to India to seek enlightenment. - 1 year ago

There has been a conceptual confusion about drugs for a long time. The term "drugs" is used to cover meth, heroin, coke and pot. But anyone with the least bit of experience knows that pot is harmless, where as coke, heroin or meth is highly addictive and destructive.
By lumping pot together with coke, heroin and meth it makes the pot seem much worse than it is.
And of course, the legal drug, alcohol, is by far way more dangerous than weed.

The Japanese drink and smoke cigarettes so much because of their stressful lifestyles. As stress isn't a killer itself, the alcohol and tobacco are just speeding up the process. If they could go to a bar where they could smoke a joint after their hard days full of work, I would predict a general increase in health and overall happiness in the nation. They're a bit too prideful too, often times depicted as racist. I'm sure the herbs would help the population be more liberal and comfortable socially, as well as relieve a lot of their stress.
