    • My students begin reading Kite Runner this week. I wanted them to have some understanding of kite fighting so they could appreciate the significance of this shared experience. This video was interesting and informative.

    • This is really neat. I was looking up some stuff because we're reading "The Kite Runner" for english. My dad and i tried to make a box kite once. It was going really well till he forgot about it and smashed it with the door by accident. XP I hope they can continue to kite fight.

    • Awesome bird on that boys shoulder.
Also I didn't ever think kites could be connected to losing limbs. Shows how much I know.

Asian kite fighters use light and agile paper kites, using razors only weighs them down. The usual goal of a 'kite fighter' is to maneuver his/her kite to cut the opponent's string. It's the materials used for this thread/string that is the key. Threads for kite battling are manufactured using special glues, chemicals, crushed glass and/or metal wires. The lines are chosen based on their ability to cut other threads and to handle kite's weight.

    • Even when they fly kites if is about fighting. That seems sad.

Nevertheless, the kites are symbolic of something healthy in so much as it reflects a lack of tyranny from religious fundamentalists.

I've read that bood, it is really amazing and did a great job exemplifying the struggles kubul faced. The movie also was good, though not as good as the book. It is very apathetic.

Thanks for the good comments everyone! It was a lot of fun to fly kites with everyone in Kabul. I actually got to meet the kite maker and master flyer who taught the actors their skill in The Kite Runner film. It takes quite a bit of skill as you can imagine!

    • very well done, poses many questions. How is it that Afghans are applauded [ as they should be ] for doing things to get their mind off the conflict in their country , but it is unpatriotic for us here in the U.S. to not be reminded about the war on terror for a day! How ridiculous religion seems to be, when it is used for keeping selfish people in power, kite flying outlawed by taliban! Finally we are fighting a segment of the people from a culture who's treasured kite flying is a conflict in itself, a private little war in the skies. thanks

    • weird but cool. it's too bad that both Bush Sr. and Clinton gave non-food aid money to the Taliban instead of stopping them from destroying human rights.

I'm with you to build kites and fight them. But when we get good I going have to betray you and cut your kite down. Sorry but its "cut or be be cut down"
