The research comes from PriceWaterhouseCoopers who suggest that 82% of retailers are discounting their merchandise this weekend. With retailers having to discount their stock to get rid of it at a time when they should be making most of their money, experts like Nick Hood, a partner at Begbies Traynor believe there will be big problems for retailers in January."Retailers are vulnerable in January because they generally have more cash and less stock than at any other time of the year, so if creditors are going to force them into administration it is the best time to do so."
Looks like the January sales of 2009 will be the biggest and best to date...

Its going to be a bad year all round .. no doubt.
We can't bail out every sector of the economy, banking, car manufacturing, retail next? The pound is so weak we can't afford to import, but the glimmer of hope is that exports may jump, if we still have the manufacturing base left to produce anything.
Companies will go under and jobs will be lost.

This will be a huge problem in the US too! But I can't help but feel that huge retailers like Walmart and Target have already affected the market long ago! So there's a huge disparage between high end retailers and others the likes of Walmart! It will be more complex sorting out who will be more deeply impacted.

Capitalism eating itself, there is one pie and to many have been taking the biggest pieces for themselves and
leaving too many crumbs behind. I for one am having the time of life watching this greed society implode on itself. When we hit bottom this time as capitalism did in the 30's we will have to rebuild from the bottom up, I hope most of us will learn the lessons taught us about trickle down economics and teach our kids and grandkids that regulations should never be taken away again. If you havn't learned the lessons of greed just sit down and pay attention to the things coming our way. Even Henry Ford got schooled from his partner that paying your employees enough compensation was good for business because the people who manufacture your product should be able to buy the product that they make. The international company's who have wrecked havoc on our country and its economic system are starting too realize they have a consumer base that is quickly
eroding. Keeping the masses in poverty creates the have's and the have nots. Some want this kind of society and are just plain happy about the events that
are taking place. It just doesn't work in America, we have been through this before and our new society will be better than before. Many people will not see the new deal coming because they will be casualty's
of the coming class warfare. Once again we will have too fight in the trenches for strong unions and health care for all, your loses will be avenged and we will get there. - 1 year ago

It's it wrong to be happy that they're going down. Maybe it'll inspire more people to shop locally owned business or head to Goodwill. Let's do better for our communities and for ourselves by leaving the large chains alone.

What went wrong is the global financial crisis and people aren't buying. And sales this time of year dramatically affect retailers "problems" next year for obvious revenue reasons. You have to have cash to continue operating.
