The drink of choice after a night of hard partying in Buenos Aires is Yerba Mate. This green tea-like beverage, drunk through a metal straw, is the national drink of Argentina and it's making waves in Europe and the US. In this pod, vc2 producer Ginger Gentile takes us from the streets of Buenos Aires to the jungles and yerba plantations of Missiones where the Yerba Mate is grown.

My dad drinks mate every day. I also will take a cup of it. It is alkalizing and makes you feel great. I love it. What a neat vid. The more info we learn about all the natural plants we have on this earth the better.

I've been drinking Yerba Mate almost daily for about two years or so. I saw the traditional way to drink Yerba Mate for the first time in a video I saw that was kind of like this one, and went out to my local health food store to buy some. I just drink it how we normally drink tea, but I really want to find those traditional bowls and use a bombilla to drink it. For people who haven't tried this, it really does taste wonderful! Almost a smokey flavor. In a good way. You feel very energized, but never that shaky feeling you can get with coffee or other energy drinks. You're very alert, you feel great. I stand behind this drink and I'm always recommending it to my friends!

Great pod. Are all the women in Argentina as gorgeous as the two in this piece? Is Buenos Aires filled with beautiful women wandering the streets drinking Yerba Mate?

here's a good place to order mate from in the USA. They ship from Seattle.

My favorite is the Té Guaraní Kurupí.

Mate is enjoyed all day every day for many people in Latin American countries and regions like Argentina Uruguay and southern Brazil.
Come exam time, I run on mate. I've never gotten the jittery effects that sometimes come with drinking an equal amount of coffee. It certainly has a different taste when compared to green, black and other teas, but one I have even come to prefer. Just add a little agave nectar! And I'm sure to only purchase mate from organic, fair trade companies.

I appreciate seeing the cultivation of this product. They never openly say the brand of what that yerba mate spokesman is working for. It's Amanda brand yerba mate. Although I'll try to get one that has the USD organic label thing just to be safe.

for all of you who are interested in Argentina, check out my blog. It updates our latest projects and talks about what it´s like to film in Buenos Aires. Currently we are filming/editing a documentary about a girl´s soccer (football) team in a villa, or shantytown, in Buenos Aires.
Hopefully it will find a home on Current!
