This is basically the first thing I ever made of any note. Back in 2001 I discovered that there was a whole community of people self-described as drive-in movie enthusiasts. These are people who talk drive-ins, reminisce, and visit them far and wide -whether they are still operating or not.
I had my own history with drive ins. My dad used to take me there every Saturday night when he had custody of me. It was at the end of the B-movie, horror splattered Roger Coreman days -the golden days if you ask me- of drive ins. But this is where I felt closest to the man who instilled a lot of fear in me growing up. I was curious about how much I had romanticized these memories, and for what purpose. Did he have the same recollection of this time shared?
Better Times (2003) is a 32" short about that intersection between memory and fact and why many of us find it hard to let go of our personal versions of history.
