Failure for Light in Newgrange for Winter Solstice

Image...
Newgrange is an ancient monument in Ireland of sorts that has 15 minutes of light a year on the winter solstice.

The dismal failure of sunlight to brighten the ancient chamber at Newgrange yesterday, which was the Winter Solstice, proved an appropriate metaphor for the year. Lots of expectation but precious little reward.

For the 20 people who had fought for their place from the 34,000 applicants to the annual event commemorating the most famous of pagan rituals, it must have been a depressing anti-climax -- much like the one we have all have been experiencing for the past few months.

It's said to be a real experience, even not in the winter solstice, it is truly fascinating.

I was an applicant for the winter solstice, although I'm glad I wasn't chosen.

I've heard of this event and phenomena before. I think it's truly amazing how the precision of it all lights up the hallway. Too bad the cheap way they're doing it now is through a tour/re-enactment of the lighting with artificial lights. But I guess it's better than nothing and gives people the opportunity to see what it's all about.
