“Arm yourself….with knowledge!”

Captain’s Comments

Happy Holidays!

The next two weeks newsletters will be somewhat abbreviated. Many are away traveling or home for the holidays. In January I will give a summary of 2008 and a glimpse of things to come in 2009. I can tell you now that we’ve had the good fortune of few officer injuries, few homicides in the district, (2 to date), and good problem solving success. This is a district with good community support and rapport.

I would like to thank all the troops at Central Station for their sustained effort all around the district, but particularly at night on the Broadway Corridor. We have also had success with prostitution abatement efforts along our western border on the Larkin Corridor and also with drug enforcement along our southern Tenderloin border on Geary.

Beat Officers have done a tremendous job in Union Square, Chinatown, North Beach and along Fisherman’s Wharf. The homeless outreach officers work tirelessly around the whole district, reaching out to those who are in need and with enforcement efforts as well. Finally, I want to thank and acknowledge all of the officers and supervisors who manage the many events in the district all year long. This year especially, Sgt. John Colla and his staff have been asked to do more with less and have met the challenge.

On 12/23/08 at 12:45 AM on the unit block of Alladin there was a small explosion and a puff of smoke. No, it wasn’t a genie appearing, it was another arson of a porta pottie on the sidewalk. This time a small propane container was also involved.

      Prostitution
081336101—12-15-08 at 6:00 PM, 100 block of Bush Street. Sgt Paul Yep and other assisting officers from the Vice Detail successfully conducted an undercover raid on the premises advertised as a massage studio and cited the suspects for prostitution.

Remember all the SAFE shopping tips:
      • Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas in public and on transit.
      • Be aware of suspicious people. Notify police or security. You may help prevent a crime! Hopefully, someone else may be doing the same for you!
      • Be alert, look confident and walk with a purpose!
      • Keep keys in your hand when walking to your car or home.
      • If shopping after dark, take a friend.
      • Leave nothing showing in your car, including packages, bags, electronics and cradles or adapters!
      • Limit your use of Ipod or earphones in public. That goes for cell phones too!

Remember to do a quick check of holiday displays and lights. Check for nicks, cuts or frayed wires. When in doubt, throw them out and do a little economy stimulating. Finally, never use candles as a display and make sure anything with a flame is out when you hit the hay. For other safety tips, check out the SFFD and SFSAFE websites. For additional safety tips, go to the SAFE website at: www.sfsafe.org

On 12/19/08, a woman from Hayward walked in to Central Station to file a report from an assault that occurred on Broadway and Columbus in October. The woman was leaving a limo at the corner and a male riding inside hit her in the face with a champagne bottle. The woman suffered a fractured cheek bone.

Cold rainy weather certainly influenced the numbers reflected above.

Captain’s Commendation; Submitted by Sgt. Paris Deshong:
      Brown Leather woman’s jacket: $4,500.00
      Brown Sequined Shoes: $1,000.00
      Brown Leather Handbag: $2,000.00
Officers Anna Patterson, Oliver Lim, Matt Sullivan and Vien Lam arriving on scene: Priceless!
The officers responded to a silent alarm on the 200 block of Post Street and happened to catch 2 drunken burglars coming out of a retail store with all of the above, and more, still on hangars. The total of all the loot amounted to over $15,000.

      Crimes of Note:
Vandals and ‘graffiti artists’ made a real mess of the area surrounding Pier 7 on 12/17/08 just after 8:30 PM. Two suspects were arrested and several others escaped after spray painting everything in sight, including rails, poles, garbage cans, light poles and even a manhole cover. Dozens of photos were taken of the damage and the painted suspect’s clothing were booked as evidence. The 2 white males 18 and 20 from San Francisco were booked on several counts of felony vandalism.

081330272--12-13-08 at 9:10 PM, Geary and Jones Streets. Officers Michael Bushnell and Rene Nielsen were dispatched to a report of a purse snatch at a bar. The female victim described the incident and the male suspect who took her purse and fled. An immediate search produced nothing however shortly thereafter the suspect was apprehended and arrested for theft and battery.

081329554—12-13-08 at 4:10 PM, Grant and Green Streets. Officer Terrance Laubach was stopped by the female victim who claimed a male suspect broke her camera which other witnesses confirmed. The suspect was apparently playing catch in the street with others when he spun and ‘fired the ball’ at the woman. The suspect was arrested for malicious mischief.

081329457—12-13-08 at 4:16 PM, Sacramento and Clay Streets. Officers Jesse Heredia and George Perez observed a male suspect on a bicycle riding on a one-way street against traffic and watched him as he peered into each parked car, actions of known auto burglars. The officers detained the suspect and found that he had an outstanding criminal warrant and ultimately was found to be in possession of burglar tools for which he was arrested.
