And all this would ultimately result in financial savings of U.S. $1.83 trillion.
"A revolution in the way we illuminate our world is imminent," say E. Fred Schubert and Jong Kyu Kim, two professors at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, New York.
"Innovations in photonics and solid state lighting will lead to trillions of dollars in cost savings, along with a massive reduction in the amount of energy required to light homes and businesses around the globe," they say in a research paper.
A new generation of lighting devices based on light-emitting diodes (LEDs) will supplant the common light bulb in coming years, the paper suggests. "In addition to the environmental and cost benefits of LEDs, the technology is expected to enable a wide range of advances in areas as diverse as healthcare, transportation systems, digital displays, and computer networking.
"What the transistor meant to the development of electronics, the LED means to the field of photonics. This core device has the potential to revolutionize how we use light."

This technology has been out for a cheap price for a long time now, why haven't we switched already? Oh yeah, our government wants us to be dependent on oil.
We've had the technology to not be oil dependent for awhile now, actually the whole world can. But then the Saudi royal family, along with the Bush family and the Central Banks wont be making trillions in profits. They can't have that. They will play god, like they have been for the last century.

so pot heads are ahead of the curve on this one
80% reduction on the energy bill not a bad bonus
over 10 year bulb life vs 6-9 months the old way
to bad they are ALL made in chinahear is today's prices off what you see above
the round bulbs cost about 90$ each
the square one 25$
for a grand total of 385$ picturedthey last 10 years
cost 15% of HPS Lights + cooling cost
run off grid powered by PV cells NO ELECTRIC BILL
any questions?the OLED HDTVs are a dream brighter, last 10x longer, thinner, and less power use

In other news... Lite-Brite stock sky rockets.

If all the lights seen in this NASA image of North America were replaced with LEDs the amount of energy used to illuminate the continent would be cut by 95 percent, according to the Rensselaer professors.
What are we waiting for?
-
LED's are cool, I have a lot of them (flashlights, light bulbs).
-
We desperately need a LED revolution. Get Obama on this issue, see what lie he'll make up to not go through with it. It must be hard for Obama to lie, knowing the people are demanding drastic and positive changes.

LED = WASTE OF MONEY
-
LEDs = THE FUTURE
The incandescent bulb's days are numbered. CFLs are more toxic and energy hungry than LEDs, they gotta go too.
According to this, you actually save money.

People like Freejordan are exactly why nothing gets done in the world. Just what are your fantastic ideas to make the world more energy efficient that can be done instantly with no startup costs?
-
Wow, that is truly amazing. I am for anything that will save me a few dollars on my crazy high electric bills.

LED's are currently a waste of money.
The return they give is less than you'd make on interest in a bank account.
You could get a solar roof for your house for $20,000 and in 15 years it will pay off, or you could take that $20,000, put it in a bank with interest, and it ALSO would pay for your elecricity bils forever, and then some.Until the price is right none of this stuff will ever catch on.

Do you think we're headed for a "Weird World" of night-time led lighting?
What a touch!
However, there are other ways to produce good light. But such takes invention; and corporations are short on inventiveness. Aren't they? -
I hope that it does become more available for household use.
It is interesting all of the different tones of light all the different lights emit.
I wonder which is best for reading or more gentle on the eyes.... not florescent, that's for damn sure! -
Any one on here that can show me how to make enough bank interest on 20 K to pay my electric bill forever i will pay you the first thousand.
