Spill at Tennessee coal plant creates environmental disaster

Image...
Parts of Tennessee remain buried under toxic sludge today after a major disaster at a coal plant. A forty-acre pond containing toxic coal ash has collapsed, spilling out millions of gallons of coal ash. Environmentalists say the spill is more than thirty times larger than the Exxon Valdez, but the story has received little national attention. Greenpeace is calling for a criminal investigation

In 1998, Phytotech, along with Consolidated Growers and Processors (CGP) and the Ukraine's Institute of Bast Crops, planted industrial hemp, Cannabis sp., for the purpose of removing contaminants near the Chernobyl site. Cannabis is in the Cannabidaceae family and is valuable for its fiber, which is used in ropes and other products. This industrial variety of hemp, incidentally, has only trace amounts of THC, the chemical that produces the "high" in a plant of the same genus commonly known as marijuana.

Overall, phytoremediation has great potential for cleaning up toxic metals, pesticides, solvents, gasoline, and explosives. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that more than 30,000 sites in the United States alone require hazardous waste treatment. Restoring these areas and their soil, as well as disposing of the wastes, are costly projects, but the costs are expected to be reduced drastically if plants provide the phytoremediation results everyone is hoping for.

    Here's why this matters.
There is no such thing as clean coal.

Unreal, we can't even help ourselves, and not reporting this is so sad. I have lived in TN, Nice people. We need to be more helpful towards each other here in the US, or we are going to go down fast!!!

They should be using this news for their clean coal ads. Bullshit still comes from bulls doesn't it?

There is something terribly wrong with the fundamentals of mining coal.
There is something terribly wrong when the science that proves coal is toxic and then it is allowed to continue anyway.
There is something terribly wrong with anyone who thinks it's OK to rape our planet by ripping off the tops of mountains to mine coal.
There is something terribly wrong with the EPA when they allow the coal industry to exploit the environment rather than protect it as the name indicates.
There is something terribly wrong the mining process, the burning process, the storage of toxic ash in a pond that certainly pollutes the ground water and most important there is something wrong with a system of government that continues to support this madness with subsidies (from your tax dollars) while ignoring the impact on the people and our planet.
Yes, there is something terribly wrong ...

Why does Obama keep using the oxymoron, "Clean Coal"? He won the election. Time to tell the corporate contributors he was just kidding.

SERIOUSLY, Barack. DO IT while you still have some credibility from those who voted for you.
