Small wind now available for homesteads

Image...
In many states, small wind (not just solar!) electricity generation in residential net-metering and even grid-connected solutions become a green choice with quieter design and tax credits.

Each and every effort that leads to less dependence on fossil fuels is worth pursuing. It's a given turbin technology will be more practical in some areas than others; doesn't matter. If it takes hold in those areas where it works best, that's all to the good. The more we use it, the more technology will be applied to it opening up more areas where it's a reasonable alternative. Or do you like your electric bills?

    Thumbs UP !!!

Still damn expensive though, and there's a $4,000 cap on the subsidies with projects costing around $80,000. It is nice that small wind is American owned, I hear our economy might be grasping at straws right now.

I discovered this company in Los Angeles a few years ago at an Alternative Building Expo (these expos are wonderful by the way and show how easily we can transform our world into a more balanced one by simple changes in the products we buy) and i was most impressed with them, so much so, that I took my highly technical husband with me to check out their facility and product. These vertical wind turbines are indeed silent, safe for birds, can operate on low wind speeds, and don't create that flap of shadow and light from the props of normal wind turbines, and are pretty much maintenance free, so once they are up, they last. Their little seahawk model is easy to install on homes and a great compliment to solar panels. And no, I don't work for them, I was just so happy to see this kind of product available.

There are quite a few DIY, open source, windmill/wind turbine designs available on the Internet. Surely these are a cheaper alternative than paying eighty grand for someone else to do it.

Besides, learning some of the skills required for this kind of project might come in handy at some point in the future...

As demand rises the prices should get better. Forward thinking municipal governments need to start thinking about loosening restrictions. It's great to hear about jobs being created instead of cut.

I respect the likes of Jay Leno, Ed Bagley Jr. and Bill Ney the science guy among others to show others that eco friendly isn't that hard to achieve! Kudos!

If the government was serious they would do more to help us get these put into our yards. Even if that meant we paid for the electricity they made for x number of years at a low rate.

True that. Unfortunately I really believe that they profit from our hefty monthly bills and are more than willing to leave us with as few options as possible. Hopefully change is on the near horizon! Peace and good times for everyone this holiday season. Thank you Current for all you have done and shared!

A kilowatt saved is a kilowatt earned.

One-by-one, implementations of solutions like this will pave the way to a sustainable future.

This is where I work - we have a "small wind" division, along with solar, biomass and more. We offer incentives to invest in renewable energy, recycling (partially) and energy efficiency devices both on a residential and commercial level. I'm not sure how many other states have this sort of program (we're only in Oregon), but we're trying to make a difference. There are many ways to get financial help in becoming energy efficient, and I hope that every state gets a program like ours. Woot, go Oregon! ^_^
