Facebook bans breastfeeding photos!

Image...
Facebook has become the target of an 80,000-plus protest by irate mothers after banning breastfeeding photographs from online profiles.

Facebook's policy, which bans any breastfeeding images uploaded that show nipples, has led an online profile by protestors - called "lactivists" in some circles - called "Hey Facebook, breast feeding is not obscene".

The online petition, which accuses Facebook of instituting the policy to "appease the closed-minded", has attracted almost 82,000 supporters.

The actions of the group came to a head over the weekend when the protesters organised a virtual "nurse-in" on the social networking website where for a day angry supporters posted a profile picture of an image of a mother breastfeeding and changed their Facebook status to say "Hey Facebook, breastfeeding is not obscene!".

Breast feeding is in no way "obscene"- to suggest that is to metaphorically slap yo mamma in the face! We have to stop perpetuating the idea that perfectly natural- and beautiful- things like nudity, sex and breastfeeding are bad and shouldn't be seen!

DeliaTheArtist - Statistics earned by overwhelming (choking) posts.
    More Puritanical infringement? Like this:
If there was a demand for a non-smoking bar, someone would build it and it would thrive. If an organization wanted to ban DeliaTheArtist from over-posting, they should have the freedom to do so. Likewise, if breast-feeding mama fetish is a demographic Facebook would like to avoid, they have the right.
If you want to open a web site devoted to the natural beauty of breast feeding, Delia:
    Please post URL...
Otherwise, stop trying to dictate the morality of others lest your morality be dictated to you. Facebook is not an unavoidable public space - it is a private entity.

It wasn't so long ago that I had one a them in my face. No matter which way I turned it was always there. It actually had a friend. I actually got kinda attached to it. I know it was kind of a sucky thing to do; but hey, what can I say?

I find the thong ass pics far more offensive then breast feeding ones, sheesh facebook, get a clue. How is a natural beautiful thing considered offensive, yet a half naked woman with dental floss for a top and bottom and her ass hanging out ok dokey? Hi Pot, meet Kettle.

some people just can't accept taking breasts out of a sexual context. so when they see breastfeeding their minds register SEX and BABIES and, unable to reconcile the conflicting input, their feeble brains assume something is morally amiss.

Boobs. Don't know why, but I love them.

It's kinda weird, but I've never found my wife's breasts more attractive than when she was nursing. At the same time, they're almost untouchable, being so sensitive, usually sore, and leaking. But wow, so much bigger.

don't get me wrong, i'm all for womens rights and shit, i have a vag, but i think it is pretty sick seeing women breastfeed in public. ever hear of a breast pump? now i understand sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do, put posting pix? i mean, come on, shouldn't some things be a little more intimate and not made public? i have no opinion on what facebook wants to do, but come on ladies, not everyone wants to see the boobies. no offense, i just don't!

If you don't like seeing pictures of women breastfeeding, don't loko at them. If your Facebook friend wants to post images of herself feeding her child, who are you to tell her no? How can you flag someone's image as inappropriate when you have to be their friend to even view them? I'm lost as to how it works, honestly.
I'm a member of the group, fer sure, but I don't understand the mechanism for flagging these images, and as such I'm not sure what criteria is even used or if a real person is involved at all. Having said this, I do know that on Current, you can get away with some incredibly offensive and disgusting images and not have them pulled. I was appalled at an image of an aborted fetus displayed inside a pair of women's underwear, only to be told that since it was drawn and not a photograph the image would stay. I have also seen graphic death images here, so who knows what pushes the envelope on this site...

Public opinion is directed by popular media and the attitude of Facebook could well influence opinions of the less informed and undo all the positive motions that have made businesses give space for mothers with hungry babies.

on a meta level, it is to discuss whether a private internet entity should ban such fotos. I think they have the right to do whatevr the please.
The real issue here is probably discussing whether breastfeeding is something that should be a) publicly visible b) viewable on the internet.
In that case, someone already made the point that breastfeeding is as natural as sex or nudity. More natural indeed than skinny models and antiage creams and sharing your private infos on the internet.
So the problem eventually originates from wrong societial norms, diformed by, well, religion.

I wouldn't mind that on facebook. I just mind when I'm at a restaurant and the lady isn't even covering her self up. I felt really weird.
