Possible Truce Between Israel and the Hamas

After four days of airstrikes that have partially crippled Hamas, Israel signaled interest today in a proposed 48-hour suspension of its offensive in the Gaza Strip to test the prospects for a full cease-fire with the militant Palestinian group.

The proposal, offered by France on behalf of the European Union, came as Israel's air force appeared to be running short of bombing targets and losing the advantage of surprise it achieved early in the offensive that began Saturday.

Now can we stop playing the blame game and really talk about how to solve the problem? What do you guys think about this truce?

    • A temporary truce is just that, a temporary truce. Hamas has always been very clear that it will never accept a peace agreement with Israel.

Any truce it enacts with Israel will be in accordance with traditional Islamic law. It will be a "Hudna" that will be used by Hamas to build up its military strength to attack Israel again.

Therefore, a truce might be concluded for a while, but it is inevitable that it will break down as long as Hamas has that worldview.

    • I think the truce would be a good thing, however for lasting peace to be achieved....

Israel must agree unequivocally that Palestine will have self rule, their own state, and their own liberty to pursue exploitation of natural resources.

If Israel would unilaterally make such a declaration, the rockets would stop almost immediately. Lasting peace would follow as hostilities cease, and focus switches to building infrastructure and economic development in both Palestine and Israel.

      I absolutely guarantee it.

    • It's difficult to reason with someone who intrinsically hates you, and who's psychology has been twisted by poverty, lack of education and decades of war.

There will likely be no progress made in this feud until Hamas is disbanded.

I am listening to NPR right now, and just heard a rep for Gaza say they did not fire rockets into Israel, and did not start this most recent incident.
How do you reason with that?

    • a truce for either side would be merely a time to acquire new targets and set up for another offensive. this most likely isn't over.
