Its a cloud of excited particles crowding around a supermassive blackhole that lies in the center of the milky way.

just remember that everyone of those lights in the sky at night are a universe, and each of those lights have millions of suns, which have hundreds of planets surrounding them, and their might be a chance that one of those planets have life.

There's information about the science behind measuring the galaxy in the clipped article - I'm not sure I understand one hundred percent and I didn't want to butcher an explanation.
The article also says the 'old' Milky Way could be compared to a 5-foot-5 140 pound man, and the 'new' Milky Way would be a 6-foot-3 210 pound linebacker!
