Billionaire kills himself over financial crisis

Image...
German billionaire Adolf Merckle has committed suicide after his business empire, which included interests ranging from pharmaceuticals to cement, ran into trouble in the global financial crisis, his family said Tuesday.

The 74-year-old's body was found Monday night near railway tracks at Blaubeuren in southwestern Germany, prosecutors in nearby Ulm said in a statement. They described the death as a "railway accident" and said there was no evidence that anyone else was to blame.

His family, which had reported Merckle missing after he failed to return home Monday, issued a brief statement saying he took his own life...

Damn! sorry to here he felt it was so bad to take his own life. Money isnt everything. it can be lost in a blink of an eye and it can be made in the blink of an eye.

I doubt he killed himself because he lost some money....more like he was part of some enron-esque scenario and didn't want to go to jail for it....

Good point. The truth has yet to surface.

Everything is relative and subjective I guess.

Why torture yourself unless you have a reason to?

It's sad that any situations are allowed to get so out control that people are forced to endure such emotions.

The system apparently needs to protect people from themselves and money better, but that's like trying to get a drug addict off the drug.

America might be having an identity crisis at the moment. Frankly I don't give a damn, as long as it designs systems to keep the truth obvious enough to make fair decisions.

Beyond that, you can't fix stupid programming of neurotransmitter reward association, and God-forbid the reality you created for yourself, so make an effort to treat that environment in which you want to believe carefully.

This would make a really interesting psychiatric case. There must be something to that story, if wealth is that hollow and fragile, then there might be a problem.

He didn't kill himself because he was broke. He killed himself because he felt he let down his family and tens of thousands of families that depended upon his industrial empire. Or because he was drunk and bet his dog he could get out of the way in time... Equally likely...

This is horrible, but it brings us back around to the similarities between now and the Great Depression.

To all the arrogant people applauding his death:

He was no high-flying billionaire for whom money was everything. He was a selfmade man who managed to change a middle-size company into a multi-billion dollar international business and who stayed on the floor while doing so. I doubt that he killed himself because of the money, as those people tend to have enough for them and their families even without the money invested into the businesses. I think he couldn't bear, watching his company going bankrupt.

A large part of global culture has been molded to obsess about money. No wonder he felt like he was losing everything if money was at stake. It's a real shame he couldn't appreciate anything else.

To get to the top you have to step on a lot of littler people. CEO is the top, so he couldn't deal with putting a job application in to a company to get a normal boring underpaid job like the rest of us, let alone dealing with the people he put at the bottom of the barrel.

Anyone who commits suicide is a weakling! How selfish of him to not think about those who love him and how they would feel if he's dead. WEAK! It's life.. deal with it.
