Apple's upcoming Face Detection system announced at Macworld

Image...
Apple's senior VP of worldwide product marketing, Phil Schiller, has revealed some exciting upcoming Mac features in the keynote speech of this year's (and the final) Macworld convention.

One I'm intrigued by is the secret service-esque Face Detection - a new feature in iPhoto '09 that analyses pictures and recognises people if you've already pre-tagged them in another picture.

As well as that, there's some intriguing developments with geotagging locations in pictures you've taken, and music fans will be pleased to know the GarageBand program is getting a pretty snazzy instrument tuition feature in which famous musicians like Sting and Fallout Boy's Patrick Slump give video lessons on how to play certain instruments with detailed annotations of which notes to play at the bottom of the screen.

Still no mention of the MacBook Wheel, Apple's rumoured new laptop that features a giant scroll wheel instead of a keyboard...

If you need to know about the rumoured keyboardless laptop, look no further than here...

If this actually works consistently (as I expect it to eventually), this will be extraordinarily cool.

Ha, wonder if this could also be used as some sort of way to figure out people who look alike

face recognition software...bout damn time (by now it should be telling me if they're happy, sad, or surprised)

...but the wheel sans keyboard seems to be grasping at former success rather becoming an intuitive design feature that is pioneering new technology

I am really hoping that everybody realizes that the Macbook Wheel is FAKE. It's the Onion guys, a satire paper. I am sure that 99% of us have grasped this fact, but I have read a few things here and there that lead me to believe that some people actually think it is real.

How could that possibly work? That's totally beyond me. I can barely recognize people in photos.

About the Wheel, the fact that people believed it was real is just a sign of good satire.

I love when developments like this are announced in the commercial sector. I think it's safe for us to assume that the technology that is made available to us, Joe Tech, is always behind that of the government and military. Face recognition has been in use as a means of identification since the late 1990's, while being in development since the 1960's. There are all sorts of reasons why this technology could be useful, but, not having to tag your friends in a photo album is probably the best for now.

If they develop this technology and use it to recognise the tip of people's index fingers, we're well on the way to Mission Impossible-style air-touch screens.

Ok, maybe not *well* on the way...
