Nigeria bikers' vegetable helmets

Image...
Motorcyclists in Nigeria have been wearing dried pumpkin shells on their heads to dodge new laws forcing them to wear helmets, authorities have said.

Officials in the northern city of Kano said they had stopped several people with "improvised helmets", following this month's introduction of the law.

Road safety officials said calabash-wearers would be prosecuted.

I love this on so many levels. Pumpkin shells for helmets, what next hollowed out potatoes for gloves?

I wonder how well a pumpkin shell would fare in a motorbike crash.....it's probably better than wearing nothing at all....

Sometimes you just have to improvise! Granted it defeats the safety purpose intended by the law but this is Nigeria where many people cannot afford food everyday much less kick down for a helmet to ride their stolen motorcycles.

I've smashed some pumpkins in my days, and I don't think they'd provide all that much protection. Better them than me.

Note to self: don't go with the melon helmet. Rubbish.

Not sure about the safety implications, but this is definitely a look I'd like to be rocking when riding a motor bike taxi.

I don't know if I'd be comfortable wearing a type of SQUASH on my head as a protective element... just based on the name itself.

I love you guys who respond to news of this kind, because i think that you are all gullible.....you swallow every news that you hear as if it is a gospel truth. Anyway, you believe, without a pinch of salt whatever the press wants you to believe. Anyway, to the best of my knowlegde, cyclist in Nigeria are smarter than that. They certainly know that vegetable hermets do not give any protection at all in case of any accident. But if they actually want to do such a thing, it is usually as a protest in order to express the present bad situations of things, and their dissatisfaction of the new government so far in the country. However, for you guys, who take in anything that you hear about Africa, it is time that you begin to use their heads and not your feelings. Many of you have not been to Africa and some of you, perhaps still think that Africa is a country, please learn to take some of the things you hear in the news with a pinch of salt. OK?...

Jimmy is right, the only thing I get out of this article is that Nigerian politicians who came up with this law, and policemen who enforce it are idiots.

I don't know if anyone noticed but Africa is like the Wild West, what makes you think helmet laws are going to be taken seriously, or should be adopted in the first place.

Does it really matter if we 'believe' the story or not? I don't believe the stories on the Onion either but I still enjoy them.
