Kevin Pietersen quits as England cricket captain

No!

He hasn't been in the job for very long, but KP has quit his role as England captain, following a run-in with coach Peter Moores!

A row erupted between the two men over whether ex-captain Michael Vaughan should be included in the test squad to face the West Indies this month.

Moores disagreed with Pietersen who backed Vaughan, and he was left out. Sky News reports KP probably stepped down because he felt he didn't have the support. Moores' future with the England cricket team remains uncertain.

England lost their last test series in India 1 - 0, following their decision to play the matches after the terror attacks in Mumbai.

I guess the question is: Should the team captain or the team coach make the final decision about squad selection?

It has to be the coach - the captains job is to lead and motivate the team chosen by the coach.

Even though Moores' success rate hasn't been the best since joining England as coach, KP had absolutely no right to publicly disagree with the coach and undermine his authority like that!

I also think spitting his dummy out and resigning because he didn't get his was is very childish!! If Moores is sacked because of this, Pietersen will have a lot of people to answer too!

I personally think England should keep Moores for the WI tour and if that doesn't work out then let him go, but the board has to be seen to back the coach over the captain otherwise everyone will think they have the right to choose the team!!!

What does Michael Vaughan think of all this? It seems that he's the one they're all arguing about.

Personally, Vaughan not going to the WI is a good idea.
It gives him a chance to get back to his best in time for the Ashes.

I mean look at what a few months in county cricket did for Harmison last year!

The selectors and administrators have a lot to answer for.

Obviously Pietersen was not the right choice and they are not clarifying roles and responsibilities.

Just because someone a great cricketer doesn't make them any good as a captain, or vice versa.

Similar happens in football regarding the conflict between coach/manager/chairman etc.

All this doesn't make for good sport but it does make for good conversation, what would we be talking about otherwise :-)

The ECB had to make a stand, issuing an ultimatum is always a bit foolish.

A wry look at the repercussions of losing our captain ... and with the Ashes just round the corner!

Has he quit the team too or just the captaincy role?

More importantly, what does his girlfriend Jessica Liberty X have to say about this? And if she doesn't, does her silence speak volumes? Discuss.
