A New Year's CIA strike in northern Pakistan killed two top al-Qaeda terrorists long sought by the United States, including the man believed to be behind September's deadly suicide bombing at a Marriott hotel in the Pakistani capital, US counterterrorism officials told The Washington Post Thursday.Agency officials determined in recent days that among the dead in the Jan. 1 missile strike were a Kenyan national who used the name Usama al-Kini and who was described as al-Qaeda's chief of operations in Pakistan and his lieutenant, identified as Sheikh Ahmed Salim Swedan, the sources said. Both men were associated with a string of suicide attacks in Pakistan in recent months and were also on the FBI's most-wanted list for ties to the 1998 bombings of US embassies in East Africa.
Kini, who had been pursued by US law enforcement agencies on two continents for a decade, was the eighth senior al-Qaeda leader killed in clandestine CIA strikes since July, the officials said ...

Al qaeda's media war: a careful point played?
if al qaeda recruits more people to their cause as a result of careless US action then this vague dodgy story just proved that the war on terror is a false economy (a big statement)
this is particularly good journalism from msnblah - "They died preparing new acts of terror," said the official, who insisted on anonymity because the agency's actions are secret.
a blogger on english al jazeera, Samuel:
"When the United Hates of America has killed all its enemies around the world, and when it has killed all the people it thinks are its enemies, and when it has killed all the people who just happened to be killed along the way, and when it has killed all the people who died as indirect victims of all these killings, then we shall all have peace and tranquility and live happily ever after, and America will have no enemies, because they will all be dead, and every living person will love America."steady on....passions are clearly very running high
english Al Jazeera's report includes: "Al Jazeera's Kamal Hyder, reporting from Pakistan, said: "[There is] speculation today in the local media that Rauf was killed in that attack."
But he added that the raid happened in a remote area and that reporters could not easily establish what happened.
"There will be question marks unless there is credible evidence that this man was [indeed] killed," our correspondent said.
where have we heard this murky beyond the reach of journalist place before?
"Most of the US raids against suspected opposition fighters have been carried out by pilotless drones.
The Pakistani government has spoken out against regular air raids by the US, saying that they alienate the population.
Asif Ali Zardari, Pakistan's president, said recently that Islamabad will not tolerate any compromise to the country's sovereignty."
hmmm... the p(owe)r structures of the world are uniquely complex. peace made to look like war, war to look like peace
did we need a reminder that if under threat directly from an organisation then you go after them and take them out using unethical and therfore media sensitive weapons.? sorry, did somebody say something...
'alienate the population'... 'compromise to the country's sovereignity' ..what do these statements mean?
i think it means the secret services should not use the media.
it would be as idiotic as corporations using politicians....
but alas that is what's happened, on both counts apparently.
the above is a very sloppy piece, but it might have done the trick in some parts of America. I hope not.
it appears the global media judge will not be played

Well, would you have us just surrender, would you be willing to wear a berka, and only have sex with one man the rest of your LIFE? Would you prepare food and keep your mouth shut? Would you be willing to have 12 kids. Could you suppress your orgasms so it would appear as if you didn't enjoy it? And last but not least would you be willing to walk an animal instead of drive. And lastus lastus, would you be willing to use a hole in the ground to defecate. If you answered If you answered yes to 4 or more of these questions, then you are in the wrong job hun.

More capital punishment doled out by the secret services without trial or jury and therefore without justice. There have been trials for the 7/7 bombings in London, where was the trial here? If we never talk to people moved to terrorism then we shall never understand why they did it, nor do we know if they were actually responsible.
